| drowfan10102-26-08, 11:19 PM | ok i know i can prob find it somewhere on the internet but ive always been interessted in what they actually are like robots of some sort or what. so if anyone can give me the basic break down of them, what they are, how long they live (can they live forever), ect. It would be a great help. |
| Crimson_Concerto02-26-08, 11:37 PM | While most people like to think of them as robots, they're actually more like golems. They're not artificial intelligence or anything; they're just golems given life. It seems like eventually their metal parts should naturally break down or rust, but thanks to the ability to make simple repairs and exchange parts and such, no Warforged known have ever simply die of old age. It's likely they are not even capable of dying of old age, actually. Their reason and origin can vary from campaign setting to campaign setting, but in Eberron, they were created to be expendable soldiers of war. However, the world eventually recognized their sentience, and they began being treated as such. However, if I recall correctly, the forges used to make them were outlawed or something so that more couldn't be made after the war. Still, some do look for ways to make more, and I think there's some BBEG Warforged NPC in Eberron trying to do this... |

I don't know if I'd call him a BBEG, per se. |
| Yadot02-26-08, 11:51 PM | Correct. Merrix D'Cannith still operates an illegal creation forge. I don't know if I'd call him a BBEG, per se. While Merrrix does have a creation forge, I think Crimson was talking of the Lord of Blades, who is in every sense a BBEG. |
| Crimson_Concerto02-27-08, 12:08 AM | While Merrrix does have a creation forge, I think Crimson was talking of the Lord of Blades, who is in every sense a BBEG.Yes, that's the one I meant, I recall that name now. :) Actually, I didn't even know about that "Merrix" guy at all. Sorry, I can't say I'm very well versed in Eberron history and such. :P |
| Thenameless02-27-08, 01:59 AM | Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a BBEG? |
| Napoleon_the_Clown02-27-08, 03:25 AM | Big Bad Evil Guy. Somebody that is a major threat. Such as Emperor Palpatine, Vader, or anyone else that's basically going to be the majority of the experience gain in a fight. |
| Captain_Kobold02-27-08, 04:38 AM | Can also mean Big Bad End Guy: as in the person whose evil machinations the players have been working to foil for the entire campaign. The confrontation with them is likely the culmination of the campaign. Anyway, Warforged. Shells of iron and stone, given movement by woody fibrous bundles, life by obscure alchemy, and sentience by forces no-one sane really understands. They are not purely mechanical like a robot would be: Their forms are created by magic and they have the potential to alter them fundamentally as demonstrated by the Juggernaught and reforged prestige classes. While those in mainstream society were created recently for a great war, it appears that there are warforged in one of the 'lost continents' that have existed for thousands of years. It is possible (backed up by the age categories) that while they might deteriorate a little over time, they may be able to live almost forever. |
| CryoSilver02-27-08, 03:17 PM | Warforged, to use the robot analogy, have Strong AI; they can think, reason, feel, etc. They are self-aware; they are sentiant creatures, unlike golems. |
| Artector02-27-08, 03:39 PM | Here's two articles written by the creator of Warforged. Article 1 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20050627a) Article 2 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20050711a) |
| Silverthumb02-27-08, 03:45 PM | Did I hear somewhere that their souls are the souls of various dead or elementals bound to the inanimate body in order to animate it? Or am I making this all up? |
| Artector02-27-08, 04:49 PM | Did I hear somewhere that their souls are the souls of various dead or elementals bound to the inanimate body in order to animate it? Or am I making this all up? The souls of warforged are open to campaign plot purposes, assuming the plot lets them have them. The original warforged were shells for creatures from the realm of dreams, and they were developed by House Cannith into the sentient creatures they are in the game, but it is explicitly said that there are still many things unknown about them. |
| Phelot_Plaguecrafter02-27-08, 05:23 PM | Yes, they were originally created to be shells prime for the posession of other spiritual creatures, but House Cannith developed and developed and developed them, and during some strange turn of events, Warforged were granted self-awareness, sentience, and what they call it, souls. Some people think it's an incredibly powerful Magic gone slightly awry, considering Magic can't outright create a soul. Some believe it's simply an incredibly powerful AI where the 'ghosts' in the machine bunched together enough to create sentience. Some believe it's the intervention of some known or unknown deity. No one really knows how they popped a soul into a shell, but by the same token, no one really knows how Dwarves, Humans, etc. popped a soul into a shell either. So, in all honesty, the evolution of the race is less of an issue than the current existence of the race. Suffice it to say this: Warforged are...Living Constructs. Pretty much in essence. Hope this helps out. |
| Holy_Beholder02-27-08, 06:11 PM | Did I hear somewhere that their souls are the souls of various dead or elementals bound to the inanimate body in order to animate it? Or am I making this all up? I know that you use an earth elemental in a normal golem, so that might be where you're getting the idea. But I'm not sure. |

All I did was file 'War-' off the name and create the alternate versions I had before: Soldier (duh!), Servant, Arcane Assistant, Healer, and a hazardous duty model I can't remember what I named. There is no reason your 'Forged' have to be carbon copies of Eberron, even in origin. The same applies to internal or external options, many of which are out there. Be careful to not 'give' too much in the way of goodies or it may create a serious imbalance and everyone will want a healing kung-fu robot wizard! |

They are the ones running the floating cities with the last of the humans on them, of course it isn't fully statted out because PCs haven't been there yet. But by default I assume when someone talks about warforged they are talking about in Eberron. |
| ToastedAmphibian02-29-08, 12:43 AM | everyone will want a healing kung-fu robot wizard! Who in their right mind DOSN'T I want one right now. |

| drowfan10103-01-08, 05:08 PM | Thanks alot guys, you answered a lot of my questions. You said they could feel, so i guess he can feel pain to? |
| LoneStranger03-02-08, 12:20 AM | Yeah, Warforged have all the senses of any other standard race (human, dwarf, etc). Which means they can feel pain, feel the difference between hot and cold, smell, taste, everything. However it has been found that Warforged senses are much more muted than other races, plus it surprised the people who created the Warforged when they found out their creations could taste and smell which was not part of the plan. |
| drowfan10103-02-08, 08:48 AM | And since they can repair them selves, if an arm or something on their body gets chopped off can they repair that because it is actually off or no? |
| ragoftag03-02-08, 10:08 AM | Again, I have to 'correct' the great god Hazbro for my game: There are several variants of each Elemental Plane in my game and not all golem spirits are 'Earth' in origin...or even 'Elemental'. What is unique about the 'Forged' is that they have actual souls, not mere 'spirits'. One of the Big Secrets in the game is why the uber-Wizards and Druids, who would disagree on principle about a blue sky, decreed that Forged are free upon attaining sentience. Slavery exists and they do not care a wit about the enslavement on millions of others, so why the concern over Forged? Again: Big Secret. |

Hope this helps out. Great information, which made me think of a question: Would it be a stretch to allow a slain character to have his/her soul (spirit, essence, whatever) brought back and "installed" into a prepared hulking shell of a "mechanical", thus creating a Warforged? Kind of like re-directing the soul into the Warforged instead of into the dead body of the PC. I dunno, just thinking out loud, so to speak. I'm not familiar with these at all, but reading this thread has got me interested in them. |
| Phelot_Plaguecrafter03-02-08, 11:46 PM | Actually, there is a Warforged Circlet that stores their conscious in a magical gem so that when the Warforged is slain, its soul can live on in another Warforged. It uses the Intelligent Item rules and basically tests its ego score against the wearer's to see if either the actual Warforged or the one possessing the gem would be the dominant personality. If willing, a Warforged can strike a mutual deal with this personality and essentially have multiple Warforged souls living in the same shell. I don't think it would be a terrible stretch to say that there was a circlet that fuctioned in the same way for non-Warforged or even just to say that the same circlet worked for any race. Circlet of Preservation, 270 Eberron Campaign Setting |
| JarionSilverblades03-03-08, 06:00 PM | I've always seen Warforged more like the Transformers then Golems. Warforged are living constructs, The Transformers are living in that they have a "Spark" which is like a soul. Warforged feel pain, so do Transformers. Warforged are given life in a creation forge, Transformers where given life by Vector Sigma. |
| Napoleon_the_Clown03-05-08, 03:22 AM | Except, you know, a Warforged can't turn into a firetruck. It could turn into a cheetah, though. Warforged Druid: Maximal/Predacon. Sweet. |
| Nived03-05-08, 04:11 AM | Things to remember about Warforged Warforged are in no way mechanical. Their actual bodies are made of stone and a fiberous musclemass described as being similar to darkwood. This can be seen in most of the art in the joints of warforged. Their Composite Plating which is attached to them is just a metal covering. Warforged have organic parts. Their blood, an oily sappy substance can be drank by vampires or by stirges. They have organs and vital bits and are subject to critical hits and sneak attacks (though are less vitally dependant on them, thus the racial 25% chance to negate critical hits). A warforged even has a brain that can be eaten by a mindflayer. Though we have no solid information on how that would taste. Warforged limbs are not plug and play. If a warforged has his arm cut off you can not just screw another one on. They need to have regeneration cast on them like any human that just lost a limb. Warforged components are wonderous items that 'plug in' to warforged, but they do not replace limbs they go over them. Warforged can die. Similar to the above point, if a warforged takes enough damage, its dead. No just rebuilding it and turning it back on. On a more positive note as a Living creature (denoted by its living construct type) they can be brought back from the dead via Raise Dead and similar spells. Warforged are still constructs. Stone, metal, and organic material given life by magic. They are immune to diseases, and poisons and have many other benifits, also some drawbacks (like cure spells only being half as effective on them). |
| JarionSilverblades03-05-08, 07:58 AM | Except, you know, a Warforged can't turn into a firetruck. It could turn into a cheetah, though. Warforged Druid: Maximal/Predacon. Sweet. Well I've been thinking about a template that can be added to a Warforged that would let them shift between their Humanoid form and a Animal form, I was going to call the Template, Warformer or Transforger. |
