| celestialkin08-12-07, 10:45 PM | Hey guys. I have been wanting to play an Avariel for about three years now, but I have not had the chance yet. Because of this I have decided to make one as a backup character in case a chance comes up to use it. The only problem is I am not really sure what class they are good for (if any). Casters, Clerics, and Bards are pretty much out of the question, due to their LA +3. I am guessing Rogues might be a bad idea, due to their large wings. I am thinking a Fighter who specializes in ranged attacks might work, but I am not 100% sure about this, and it kind of seems like the only class which could work for them. Does anyone know if a Scout (from Complete Adventurer) would work for this race? It might work if the +1d6 damage works with it's flight speed. However, it might be a bit difficult to stay undetected while hovering in midair. Also, will this race be a burden in campaigns which take place in dungeons, due to their inability to fly in cramped spaces? Since all campaign modules have at least some battles which take place indoors I am afraid this could be a serious problem. Thanks in advance for any advice! |

Actually, it's more a matter of those three lost levels of Hit Points ... since you can't fly away from the melee beatsticks like Ogres. Thanks in advance for any advice! Does your group use the SRD or Unearthed Arcana? You might ask your DM if he's using the Level Adjustment Buyoff rules ... it'll take many, many levels, but you can eventually negate that Level Adjustment. |

But according to the class's role description, a big part of the class is being able to detect enemies before they detect you. They are supposed to be scouts after all. I have the book, and I don't think my current DM would have a problem with it. Finally, a chance to use that book. :) Oh, and would carrying a lot of explosives and splash weapons be a good idea for a race like this? Maybe some Thunderstones/Thunderstone arrows as well? Or would just firing my bow be a more effective idea? I am brand new to this flying creature and three-dimensional combat thing. |
| AZNsupermarket08-13-07, 01:07 AM | Do you know that a sun elf with the winged template is nearly identical to a Avariel, except it has an LA of +2? Did you know that LA above +0 is almost never worth it? |
| koiulpoi08-13-07, 01:41 AM | As AZNsupermarket put it, check out the Winged template from Savage Species. Your LA will be one lower, and you'll have better maneuverability to boot. I'm currently playing an Avariel Monk, and it's fun. Not the best choice, but certainly fun. I recommend going hardcore archery and sitting far away, in the air, sniping. If your maneuverability is at least "good" you can hover. If the "Winged" template is out of the question, there's the Improved Flight feat. |
| Templario08-13-07, 07:15 AM | Well, you can always try to find a liberal DM who allows Unearthed Arcana, then using the LA buy-off rule. But, having +3 LA, you would starting paying the 1st level of your LA only on your 9 HD :P |

I have heard a lot of birds not making too much noise when they fly - or hover, for those of them that can. As for a class, scout is okay, I suppose. Expeditious dodge is your friend :) and I guess multiclassing with ranger and swift hunter can be useful, too. At least, as useful as something without mega-spells can be on a race with LA +3 and somewhat crappy abilities... |
