Hey, I'm starting in an all-commoner campaign, and I'm wondering about which race to choose. I'm thinking about going for human right now, as the commoner is so starved for feats and skills, but I'd like to hear some suggestions. LA +0 only. Thanks. :)

has anybody ever had an all-commoner game last more than like 4 sessions and/or be any fun?

almost all commoners suck equally. go with Dwarves though, dwarves get all the good advantages. Gnomes too.

Warforged. A feat isn't going to do much without some level of class support to back it up, or a whole slew of other feats. The Warforged will do well; make your first level feat the Adamantium-carapace one.

Toads. As in the mushroom people from the Mario games. They get Commoner as their favored class.

No, really. (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Toads_%28DnD_Race%29)

What? Have you not read the amazing story of Joe Wood the fireman (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=763260)? He's a commoner, and he's real cool.

Thanks for the suggestion, but are there really any warforged commoners? I imagine that they'd all have levels in some military class, considering their origin.

Hmmmm.

PHB:

Human, bonus feat and extra skill point for the capitalist commoner.

Halfling, for the commoner with an archer/hunter mind.

Elf, for the fighting commoner.

Half orc for the working commoner.

SRD:

Goblin, riding sneaky paladin like.

Human would be the most sensical.

In an economy thread... (Yeah, econ in DnD, I know. *Rolls eyes*. Everyone should know by now that the DnD economy runs off of initiative, base land speed and scrying. Yes, there is a reason.)

... it was discussed that human commoners are awesome. They simply drop huge skills into things such as profession and craft, then use the spare feat for skill focus.

I see a Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold being awesome.

Why?

At third level (assuming you put a 12 into Con, racial adjustments making it a 10) you could have 3D4 + 30 hp (for an average of 39 hp).

How? First HD is maxxed, so 4 hp. The other two average for an additional 5, so there's 9. The 30 all come from one feat: Epic Toughness.

But he can't take that feat, he's not epic levels

Yes and no. True, he's not Epic levels, but the Draconomican states that dragons that are Old or older qualify for epic feats.

Kobolds, according to Races of Dragon, have the twelve age categories (just divide the normal age by 10 to get a Kobold's age for that category). Dragonwrought also changes their type to dragon.

So, a venerable Dragonwrought Kobold is a dragon of at least Old age, thus, making it the most broken LA+0 race there is.

There are rumors that a renegade Cannith artificer is still running an illegal creation forge in secret and releasing some of the resulting Warforged into society for some undisclosed purpose. One of those might conceivably take up the Commoner class.

Just talked to my DM about warforged in his campaign world (homebrew).

The conversation went like this.

Me (innocently): So... does your world have any warforged in it?

DM: Well, I don't know, I haven't... wait. No. NO! YOU ARE NOT PLAYING A WARFORGED COMMONER!

Me: :weep: But I'd have like 19 armor class and 2 DR at first level!

For some reason that failed to sway him.

Oh, and no Races of the Dragon. I have the rest of the race books though (excluding RoE).

Human.

With his bonus feat at first level, a human commoner can easily outproduce his elvish, dwarven, halfling, or gnomish counterpart by dumping both feats into Skill Focus. This is how you can explain why humans are the most numerous and powerful of the common races in most settings; they have the most productive workforce.

Why would you try to optimizer a commoner? Just pick whatever race you want. If I was playing I'd go with an orc. The bonus's to hit will help out a lot.

actually if I was playing I'd go with a half-elf just because it's probably the worst race and not one the dm is expecting. My feat progression would probably go like this: Dash, Run, dodge, mobility, fleet of foot, elusive target, Expeditious Dodge

yeah, there's a reason we are so prolific, and it isn't cuz' we mate like rabbits. just look at goblins and orcs.
as for a commoner campaign, that's terribly progressive and brave of you to attempt, but you might want to run it past your PCs first.

Nope. It's because we mate like rabbits and don't kill each-other just because someone else got the better meat.

Ever think about Raptorans from RotW? They could be intresting for a commoner campaign, especially if you grap the spear or longspear as your one weapon porficiency.
