I am looking for some good templates to add to a few characters. I need to have a number of good choices for this to work in my game because each character will get a different template.

The plan is to have each players character acquire a template temporarily. Then, possibly have it removed, and replaced with another. there is actually a bit more to it then that, but I don't want to get in to the details now.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a few interesting templates? Also briefly describe what they do and where to find them if you would be so kind. Thanks :-)

Time for a shameless plug:

I'd have to say my modified vampire template (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=708607). I've always liked vampires, and I was happy to see that they had been made into a template in 3E, as opposed to a static 8 HD monster. This template pretty much is based on the standard MM template, with powers scaling by level/HD, and answers a lot of unanswered questions (What happens if a vampire doesn't feed? What happens if a vampire doesn't rest in his coffin?)

Realistically, I'd be happy enough playing with the standard template too. A lot of my version was made to clear up a lot of empty holes in the rules.

My No.1 favvy template has to be Shadow Walker (Unapproachable East). Dex bonus for a Con penalty, racial bonus to Hide and an increasing (based on HD) number of Spell-Like Abilities themed around manipulating darkness (plus a couple of other minor bits). Applicable to Humanoids only, +1 LA.

No.2 spot has to go to Necropolitan (Libris Mortis). Become an Undead. 'Nuff said.

Chameleonic and Mineral Warrior (both in Underdark) occupy a shared No.3 in my ratings. The first more or less simply gives you a Climb speed and a massive racial bonus to Hide and the second basically turns you to stone (BIG DR/Adamantine, Str and Con bonus for Dex penalty...possibly a Cha penalty too, but I forget and a couple of other bits too)

So far those are good suggestions. I can actually get a copy of Libris Mortis and underdark. Do not have Savage species or Unapproachable East however :-(

Any more you guys can suggest would be cool.

Yuan-ti broodguard is a +0 LA template, that gives you Rage, immunity to charm and hold person and poison. You lose some Int and Cha, but it still seems like a crazy good deal for any fighter type.

Savage Species, sorry. I thought I had that in the post, but apparently one of my edits of the post removed that info.

I rather like Dark from Tome of magic. Hide in plain sight + Whisper Gnome = Where the hell did he go?

Also, it's a killer lvl adjust but, Dark + Skulk = Dead before you even know there was a guy there.

Multiheaded from Savage Species because nothing says awesome more than a multiheaded dwarf.

Half-Vampire from Libris Mortis can be fun.

Amphibuous from Stormwrack is a good one as well.

Shadow, from Lords of Madness or Manual of the Planes is one of my favorites. Half-Fey (Fiend Folio, I think) can be interesting, as can Anarchic and Axiomatic from the Planar Handbook (Axiomatic works best if the whole party has it). Also, you might want to check the NPC abilities from DMG II (pg 157); they're often overlooked, and very flavorful (I like Dragon Touched and Poisonlaced myself).

I'd have to go with a couple of oldies...

Half-Dragon. LA +3.
+8 STR
+0 DEX
+2 CON
+2 INT
+0 WIS
+2 CHA

Breath Weapon, Immunities, bite attack, claws, wings for a large creature (Or medium, if the right feats are applied, Thank you Draconomicon and Races of Dragon). +4 AC.

Or, my personal favorite.

Half-Golem. Iron, prefferably. LA +3
+12 STR
-2 DEX
+6 CON
-6 WIS
+0 INT
-6 CHA

DR/25

+11 Natural Armor
Breath Weapon- 1d4 Con 1st save, Death second.

Deadly, eh?

I'd say half-celestial or half-fiend. I've always loved outsiders and just the fact that it's not dead weight (even useful dead weight) like other templates makes me love them even more...

FYI, by dead weight what i mean is the templates abilities remain static from the first level you get them to the last.

Half-fiend and Half-celestial aren't like that, you get spell like abilities by hit dice and some of your abilities like smite evil become more potent.

Yep Half-fiend or Hal-celestial all the way...

Just an FYI the Half-Golem has LA (-) not LA (+3), its CR is (+3)

I'm going to have to say my two favorite templates are Grave-touched Ghoul(Libris Mortis) and Shadow Creature!(Lords of Madness/Manual of the Planes for 3e version). Both of them are +2 LA and really give alot for the level adjustment, especially if you happen to allow LA Buyoff as from in Unearthed Arcana.

The Example Grave-touched ghoul monk is even neutral!

For RP-ing, Half-Celestial and Half-Dragon.

Mechanically, Draconic.

i gotta say dragonic from races of dragon

i hate high ecl/la and this is only +1

+2 str
+2 con
+2 cha
+1 nat armor
+4 vs sleep / paralysis
2 claw attks based on size
dark vision 60 ft
low-light vision
+ 2 intim and spot

with this template and my new fav race (kobold) variant: arctic kobold, as a lvl 4 char. i get the following stats (saying i make the char at 4)

+2 str
+2 dex
+2 con
-2 wis
+0 int
+2 cha

thats crazy plus i have nat armor of 2.

so in short dragonic FTW

I quite like the "spellwarped Template" ( MM III; p.163)
Str +4,Con+4, Int+4, Dex+2 , Nat Armor +2
Spell Resistance and Spell Absorption

altogether LA +3
