We have a centaur paladin character. What should he get for a "mount"? Would it be more like an animal companion?

A (celestial) human with a lance to ride him. Then they both can do charges. :)

That's a good question. I would probably work on an alternative feature to replace Special Mount. Wings perhaps, either at a higher level or make it start bad (Half Base Move and Poor Maneuverability) and have it get better as the Paladin progressed in level.

LMAO,

I would just go with a horse as a pack animal to store and carry extra gear.

Maybe he could count as his own mount and receive the appropriate mount benefits...:D

PHB 2 has an option for Paladins called Charging Smite, It would fit this character like a glove. Instead of a mount, the character deals extra damage if he smites while charging.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Maybe he gains a companion horse. Him and the horse are close, and they treat each other as equals. He dosnt ride his horse, but they do fight alongside each other.

Dungeonscape offers an alternate class feature (the excerpt can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070209a&page=1)) for paladins that replaces their special mount.

It's not dungeon-specific, and can be pretty useful.

Regards.

I could make a joke about him riding a celestial horse, but it wouldnt be PG.

I would go with the charging smite feature. or come up with a few ideas and ask him which he would prefer as a replacement.

My ideas:
Charging Smite (canon material)
Maybe some extra smite evils
Maybe some kind of celestial movement he can make use of a few times per day. (maybe he can air walk 1/5 paladin levels for like 1 + cha mod rounds)

Just give it another centaur, preferable of the oposite sex.

An augmentation to his hooves that gives them retractable wheels. When activated, he can move twice as fast, but needs to make a dc 15 balance check to run.

Well, seeing as he's essentially his own mount, giving him another would be redundant and pretty useless. Maybe he could get the Bard's Inspire Courage ability instead, powered up a bit since he had to wait a few levels to get it.

The Centaur Paladin can summon "Tor the Shuttlezord!" When these two combine they form the Thunder Ultrazord," a neigh unstable wall of evil slaying righteousness! :D

EDIT:
Note that was a really lame Power Ranger's reference. Tor was the big turtle the zords went into, lol. If I could find a picture that would load correctly I'd add it.

At any rate, I'd suggest doing something unique for the Centaur. Instead of eliminating the Special Mount or giving him an Animal Companion of sorts, why not give him a mount that does something unique and different compared to a horse? That's where Tor popped into my mind. A Huge Turtle Mount that decreases speed but increases AC would be something worthwhile. Granted a giant turtle that comes down and the Centaur fits into it seems weird BUT why couldn't the 'Mount' simply be a very large living shield that, as stated, decreases speed but increases AC (by something akin to +8).

At any rate the PHB II variant would be your best bet if you are looking for something official.

/agree w/celestial behir: It needs to be huge and it needs to have more legs than he does...

Giant centipede? Everybody likes vermin

Failing that, his god could scratch his head, decide he doesn't like the logistics of this problem, and permanently polymorph him into a human.

Centaurs can ride horses and other centuars just fine. It just tends to make little centuars.

Get charging Smite, and then take Spirited Charge and other mounted combat feats.

why not just gain the powers of the mount 1/day for 2 hours?

bonus HD? Similar to death knell

Natural armor adjustment? as per the amulet

Str adjustment? bull strength/ divine bonus

Int? fox's cunning/Divine bonus

Special? make the empathic link link/share spells/share saving throws apply to 1 other character of the same faith and alignment as the paladin within 10feet per paladin level.
imprived evasion, improved speed and spell resistance aply to the centaur, and for the Command creatures, let it aply to their tauric counterpart: centaurs to horses, wemics to lions ect.)

just remember that these only last for 2 hours a day
The_Shaman

02-26-07, 03:28 AM
AFAIK Champions of Valor has something for tauric paladins... I don't remember it at the moment, but I think it was speed increase. There's no reason why they can't get a celestial animal to help them, though - or a young dragon ally as per the Draconomicon.

Actually this would present some interesting RP oporunities, but I doubt that they would do such an action durring battle. Use the rules for a mount in terms of bonuses, but say they are mates that share a divine link that grants them greater power to fight evil. It would help a centaur that is in a party that likes to go to the brothel, who doesn't want to be left out due to his race. Just try to be civil. Marrages are normally held in a church, so such a divine union might be possible.

Id probably suggest the palidin variant from dungeonscape as a very good option for any palidin who dosnt want/cant ride a mount.

Would Mounted Combat be useful as a feat? Could the centaur paladin do a ride check for himself?
ElberethSilverleaf

03-02-07, 12:57 AM
Obviously since he's a centaur giving him a mount is out of the question. Why not a celestial animal? Something that could keep up with with him speed-wise.
I would seriously consider a celestial horse based on the "Companions" of the Mercedes Lackey novels. They're the reincarnated souls of good aligned people who have decided to come back to guide and act as companions to people of pure heart. (I'm really simplifying the subject) If you haven't read any Mercedes Lackey yet, any public, university and most high school libraries have at least one or two of her herald series novels.

Another option following the same theme is a celestial owl, hawk or eagle who is a reincarnated soul. I assume as a centaur the character is not doing any dungeon crawls, so an celestial companion who can fly would be a great asset.

Well, according to races of faerun, centaurs can acquire the spirited charge feat without having to meet the prereqs and apply it to their melee attacks.:)

I doubt you would be able to benefit from ride checks since you can't really benefit from mounted combat.

well he would get a celestial butt of corce.

but no sireously he should probably take the new substatution ability that gives him acsece to floting celestial spirits that genirate differant oras, all he has to give up in exchange for this is his special mount as such in this case I would say it is almost a nesesity. it is from cungionscape.

…I like the visual.
