| msavage06-13-07, 06:45 PM | Just a newbie question. What races would be a good selection for a Warlock player character that wants Regeneration like a troll? Preferably while still being a Medium creature of basic humanoid shape. Thanks for any replies. |

| tui06-13-07, 09:33 PM | Human with a ring of regeneration. You also get a free bonus feat. A ring of regeneration is really NOTHING like a Troll's regeneration, except the part about regrowing limbs, which has very little mechanical benefit in D&D. |
| Captain_Kobold06-14-07, 05:01 AM | Are you sure you want full, troll-like Regeneration? That is going to do really nasty things to your level adjustment. Since a Warlock is primarily a caster-type, this will significantly weaken your offensive powers. You might be better off looking for a race or template with Fast Healing. I can't suggest any off the top of my head, but I would imagine that they are more common as well. |
| msavage06-14-07, 06:40 AM | Vitriolic Blast is on my list so I can avoid caster level checks to beat spell resistance, and Epic Eldritch Blast at later levels should step up the eldritch blast damage for lost levels. The gain is that if the Warlock is resistant to the damage types that bypass the Warlock's regeneration then the Warlock will be a very hard kill unless the creatures are specifically prepared ie. have Disintegrate or something similar on hand (plus I am considering combining with Fast Healing which overlaps to increase the base healing rate of the regeneration when taken sufficient times). Its a trade of offensive for defensive since our play group consists of usually a single player and a DM - hence little lee way for accidents. We have to play with a strong emphasis on defense. We don't usually allow one player to play multiple characters because of the temptation to sacrifice a few characters for the benefit of the player's favourite character, and we don't like splitting the experience and treasure. Just the particulars of our group and how we play. |
| lord_xarallon06-14-07, 07:01 AM | You play a human, take Tougness as your first feat, then you take Troll Blooded (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Troll_Blooded,all) as your bonus feat. That's the easy part. Now, go to your DM and say: "This is not broken" while you hope for a natural twenty on your bluff check. |
| Captain_Kobold06-14-07, 08:42 PM | My point is that chances are, any race or template with Regeneration in it is going to mean that you won't be getting access to vitriolic blast until four or more levels after you could have done. Also, very few DMs will allow you to have energy resistance to the types of energy you are vulnerable to. However, you know your own game, so if you can get one over on them like that, fair enough. |
| msavage06-14-07, 10:55 PM | Thats a possibility. We do play by the letter of the rules, playing it more as a boardgame than an RPG game. Another allowed option for our group is a half-green dragon troll with 10 levels as an fire elemental savant. Its got the regeneration, plus its immune to fire and acid which are the only things that can bypass its regeneration. Jury is still out on whether you can coupe de grace it when its unconscious with a fire or acid attack. One of the good elements of this build is also that elementals don't age according to the Immortality thread in Character Optimization. Its allowed in our group, because there are still ways to kill it quite easily at that level (eg Disintegrate). |
