| The_Shaman07-14-07, 11:31 AM | I haven't actually had a DM who would allow it, but the lesser Aasimar from PGtFaerun (same as normal aasimar, but not an outsider and gets zero LA) would probably be the best. Gold Dwarves and humans also make great paladins, and if you can live with the +1 LA, the draconic template (draconomicon) works well on anything combat-based - and doubly so on paladins. The regular aasimar is okay, too, if a bit lackluster for its LA. For barbarians, I would say human or shield dwarf is quite stable. Even the half-orc could work, although I would prefer the desert environmental version from OA. Among the LA-inclusive options, goliath (yummy sub level), draconic creature, or bariaur might be nice. |
| AMGriffin07-14-07, 01:24 PM | A human or gold-dwarf with the draconic template would work quite nicely. If you're playing with high LA races the half-celestial is a fairly solid choice. Barbarians? Look no further then the Goliath. |
| DwarfPcfan07-14-07, 03:31 PM | I think the best races for a paladin a paladin are first Human and Dwarf (both equally). Dwarf culture, background etc works perfectly with paladin concepts. as well their is no mechanical drawback to playing a dwarven paladin (seriously, the -2 to charisma is not a drawback with all he other goodies you get). Also remember the Knight of the underdark variant in complete champion for paladin's (replace mount for earth based abilities, fits with paladin's of Moradin) Humans from a role-playing perspective conjure the image of templars, shinning knights etc. You can't go wrong from a role-playing perspective. That said mechanically, a bonus feat and more importantly, extra skill points help for builds and entering prestige classes. Other good races for paladin: Goliath (yes I'm serious) Aasimar Half-celestial (if you can have sufficient levels) Lizardfolk (as weird as it may sound) Azurin elf (check out the racial substitution in races of the wild and you'll know why I'm saying it) Half-giant (yes I'm serious) As for barbarians, again I'd say dwarf and human for similr reason. Dwarves make cool barbarian in the battleragers of their culture (wich in turn justifies well the beserker strenght variant of PhB2). as well mechanically they are awesome barbarians (their's nothing so comforting the a dwarven barbarian with 20 constitution at level 1). As well humans have Conan, Beowulf etc to as examples of cool barbarians. Mechanically, the feat really pays in (I personnaly like Reckless rage and extra rage as my two starting feats) Other good options: Goliath (again you can't go wrong and the racial substitution are awesome) Pure Orc (for the same reasons and Races of destiny offers great substitutioon levels) Lizardfolk (great for high Ac barbarians) Half-Giant. Half-Ogre Minotaur (Even at ECL 8, they really pay off) Ogre (+10 strenght:eek: :weep: ) Have fun... |
