When is LA buy-off feasible? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm about to start play at 1st level with a Half-Giant (LA +1). I'm using the example in Complete Psionic to begin at 1st level. Low levels (2-5ish) will be a struggle with the LA +1, especially the sacrificed hit die. My question is... Would buying-off the LA be feasible at ECL 4? I completely understand how worthwhile it is for the long-term. I'm afraid that if I sacrifice another level at that point, I will be considerably weaker than the rest of the party -- and that's not very comforting in the "tank" role.

Any suggestions? Thoughts on buying-off LA? Should I just waiting until a higher level, when my character is stronger (and makes up for the LA)?

Well, acording to the typical buy off roles, you buy of your level adjustment at the stated level, or you dont. There IS NO later chance to remove it.

...looks through documents...

Indeed, you are correct. I should alter my original questions a bit, then...

Would buying-off LA +1 at ECL 4 be worth it? In the long-run, I know the answer is yes. I'm just worried about being effectively 2 levels behind the rest of the party for a while. I know the LA characteristics should help offset that slightly; but, what about the hit dice?! I'll have the least number of hit points for a while -- not too great for a tank.

Has anyone tried to pull something like this off? Any tips? Do I just run away from combat for a few levels? jk

I would recomend enslaving a cleric, or being very, very carefull, probably both. Fight defensivly.

Its worth it in the short term as well. You are a little more fragile then the other PCs but you will gain exp faster and catch up in level more quickly. Trust me the little bit of level loss is worth because you won't be stuck lagging behind forever.
