I have a rogue werewolf who has transformed for his first time recently, and both me and my DM were wondering on this; Do you keep the benefits of magical items, such as rings of protection?

As long as the character can still wear the items he keeps the benefits, but if a character changes enough so that the items meld into the body then the benefit goes away.

So...If I had an amulet, he would still get the benefit, but if I had shoes he wouldn't?

As a general thumb of rule, all magic items carry over save for armour and weapons, unless the entry states otherwise.

So rings, amulets, boots etc should carry over (they will automatically resize to fit the new size).

But when transforming into something like a wolf. you really dont have feet any more so boots would meld into you. or do you see wolves running around with boots a cape and gauntlets. Wow now thats cute funny and might give me weird nightmare ( the bad dreams not the horses)

But yeah if you grow into your half human half wolf form then sure.

Lycanthopy doesn't work like polymorph or wild shaping.

Items are not melded into your body. If you cannot wear them they will either fall off or be destroyed.

If you can wear them however they will function normally.

Wolfs do have most of the body slots for items that humans wear, but if i remember correctly and armor that you wear will be destroyed by the change.

By the way wolves have feet, four of them. Gloves might be a problem, but not boots.

Alright, I believe that the lycanthropy entry states that it works like Alter Self, which does meld armor and such into your body. Further, it only stated that armor is destroyed if you change into a larger form, but that was changed in the errata. Definitely look at the errata for this, the categorization of the change differs.

The boots will automatically resize to fit whatever passes for your feet. This means that even centaurs or even treants can wear boots, since nothing expressly prohibits them from doing so. It might look weird aesthetics-wise, but perfectly legit.:)

The way lycanthopy works was changed in the errata. The ability is now based on the Alternate Form ability (which no longer has ties to the Polymorph spell). Also, changing form no longer ruins your equipment.

Lycanthrope
Monster Manual, page 176 and 178
Replace the first sentence of the Alternate Form entry
with the following text:
A lycanthrope can assume the form of a specific animal
(as indicated in its entry).
Changing Form: Eliminate sentences 3, 4, and 5 (from
“Changing to animal or hybrid form…” to “…on a DC
15 Fortitude save.”

Alternate form now has this line:

Any gear worn or carried by the creature that can’t be worn or carried in its new form instead falls to the ground in its space. If the creature changes size, any gear it wears or carries that can be worn or carried in its new form changes size to match the new size. (Nonhumanoid-shaped creatures can’t wear armor designed for humanoid-shaped creatures, and vice versa.) Gear returns to normal size if dropped.

Basically, your gear will resize if you change sizes but any equipment you can't wear in your alternate forms simply falls off.

Check the errata (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20050803a) for more details.

:censored: Polymorph errata. Anyway the entry says it does work like Polymorph but it doesn't affect gear. It is in the first line so it should still not affect gear.
