The two things are unrelated. Either that or you're misunderstanding what they're saying. Maybe a ranger is better as an elf. (Better than, for example, a human or a dwarf.)

Unless that's an elf ranger ;)

Seriously, Amaranth, you are mixing apples and oranges (or in this case, blackberries and mushrooms).
Ranger is a class, like fighter, rogue, wizard.
And Elf is a race, like human, dwarf, goblin.
There is no real opposition between the one and the other. A character can be both (elf ranger).

The only good elf is a dead elf, so it's only natural for a ranger to be better than an elf.

Not really. AD&D 1st edition was the same than now in D&D3.5 : Choose a race then a class.
You are refering to D&D Basic, where some races were combinations of race/class.
The elf was kind of a fighter/mage.

OD&D didn't have rangers at all, though.

And here I was hoping for a joke thread...

Q: How do you tell the difference between a male elf and a female elf?
A: I don't know, but neither do they.

An elf, if he took the proficiency or the class allowed him it, could use a great sword. Thus the argument and the thread are irrelevant.

Better at what and under what circumstances?

Why not be both? There is no inherent contradiction. In fact, Elf as a race, fits the flavor of Ranger, as a class, fairly well and vice versa.

If a priestress of eilistraee (both surface elf or drow) can use a bastard sword with lethal effect, a warrior can use a greatsword.

Face it; elves are ok. :P Not as much as an human, but sure better than a knee-bitter. :P

Seriously, the level of hate some guys show toward fictional races, be it elves or furries by example.... It's eerie, to say the least.

So I've made a new feat that elves get a 1st level, check it out...

Cancer:
Prerequisite: Elf
Benefit: All elves start the game with cancer and recieve a -8 to all ability scores, this stacks with the -2 penalty to constitution, meaning that if you roll less than a 10 for your constitution score your character died at birth.

also...

Not Cancer:
Prerequisite: Cancer, Level 9
Benefit: If an elven character ever wants to be rid of their horible cancer now is their only chance as this feat may ONLY be taken at level 9,
if the charcter takes this feat it takes effect at level 10, at which point the penalties from cancer are reduced to -2 instead of -8, this stacks with the -2penalty to constitution Elves normally recieve.

You mean something like, "Why is a raven like a writing desk?"Why is it that whenever this one comes up, someone invariably posts something like:OO! OO! OO! Why NineInchNail? Why?I think the truth is because people haven't read enough Lewis Carroll -- or perhaps they haven't heard of Google. I mean, I don't read things just because they're "classic" (in fact, I figure that things that survive because they're "classics" often have no merit to themselves besides being "classics" -- that is, they endure because English teachers want them to endure), but Alice in Wonderland? Come ON, if you haven't read that, get off the Internet. :PThere's several different "answers", but Carroll wrote this in some later editions of Alice in Wonderland:Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: `Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all.So, it had no answer, but was merely meant to be whimsical -- sort of like most of his delightful genius, no?

(Aside: A few sites I found while looking for that exact quote call attention to that last bit, claiming that the original was "it is nevar put with the wrong end in front". "Nevar" = "raven" backwards, which makes that last line true for both desks and ravens. Linguistic puns like that are a thing of beauty -- however, I can't confirm that this is in fact the case beyond those websites. I'm away from my own copy right now.)

That said, the most common answer I've heard is NOT the one given above but rather "Because [Edgar Allen] Poe wrote on both." I don't know where that answer first originated, but I'm willing to bet it wasn't Carroll.

If you also haven't read Douglas Adams, not only should you get off the Internet, but you should lock your doors and windows at night and sleep with a defensive weapon next to your bed, for I might just send ninja death-squads after you.

I don't find this funny. I've lost a lot of family members to cancer. I don't get why a thread like this is made, proceeded by endless elf-bashing and insane comments.

ELFS SUXX0RZ ALL OVA TEH PLACE!!!1!!1 MY HALF-FANG DARGON SHIFTER MONK/WARSHAPER IS TEH BETTERS RACE!!1!

Here's a suggestion: If you don't like a race, don't play it. That's it. Don't bash them, don't make stupid feats that penalize them for no reason, don't insult or belittle people who enjoy playing them. Me, I like dwarves. Always have, always will. And granted, my stuntie can drink your elf under the table, but your elf will win the dance contest.

And BTW, dwarf ranger FTW. Favored enemy goblin or giants and matched mithril dwarven war axe and adamantine hand axe all the way. :D

Yes, I was such a fanboy that I booed at the LotR trilogy (both the books and the movie) everytime Legolas got mentioned. Same went for every other Elf mentioned.

I also used tip-ex to cover up every mention of an Elf to keep myself from spitting involuntarily when I read them.

No, V_T has always been against the worthless elves. It was he who found out that elves have a racial cap of 1d6 damage for all weapons that they weild.

Elisstrae is the drow god of emos and teen angst. The only weapon her followers can wield are razors, and even then they often are doing it wrong.

Damn straight! Apparently, these dumbasses don't take the feat "Down the Road" at 1st level, so they're stuck running them across the street.

You know, I don't know who's worse:
The elves, for obvious reasons explained in a legendary thread,
The aforementioned emo worshipers of that naked chick whose name I can't spell,
Or the drow with their "nonconformist" death metal and devil-worship and what-not.

So far, every bit of evidence ever has shown that elves suck.

The term "bourgeois" is specific to the ruling capitalist class, and cannot be used to refer to anyone you wish. Your use of the term is especially ironic, since I'm a communist and V_T's an anarchist.

To stay on topic, elves are dirty, smelly hippies. Rangers, on the other hand, are manly men who hunt bears in the woods with their bare hands. Chuck Norris doesn't star in "Walker: Texas Ranger" for nothing.
