Why not play a Grimlock? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Your answer to "Why you play the game" (or, "Why you play the race you play") is no better than anyone elses.

+ They're like the classic trolls, but without eyes.
+ They're strong, tough, and smelly.
+ Grimlocks are camouflaged in mountaineous areas or underground.
+ And smell an orc from 5 miles away.

IC reasons not to play a grimlock:
- They're bloody helpless against anything that's not in their blindsight.
- Grimlocks eat humans, elves, gnomes, shifters, mephits.... well, any potential ally is a potential meal too.
- And while they can smell and orc from 5 miles away, an orc can smell a grimlock from 5 miles away too.

OOC reasons not to play a grimlock: +2 LA, 2 monster HD, blind beyond 40 feet. 'nuff said :P

Flavor isn't the answer to why one should play a race. One should play a race because they will have fun playing that race- regardless of whether or not they have fun for flavor reasons or mechanical reasons.

DnD is a role-playing game. Races exist to tell a story that goes beyond numbers. If you or someone else want to play number-and-carnage-games, then that is your choice. In that case, the name of the race doesn't matter at all, as there simply is no difference other than the quantity of muscles or grey matter contained in the fleshy vessel of your avatar of destruction. As for me and my house, we play roles.

06-09-07, 01:39 PM Do as you like. If that's how you have fun, then that's great for you. But DnD is a game- it's meant to be fun; that's its purpose (besides making money). If you are having fun playing DnD, then you are playing the game right.

Personally, I like a blend of role-playing and mechanics. I optimize, but story and interaction and still very important. But I won't say that someone is playing the game wrong if they do something differently.
