Wolfish race? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-17-07, 03:22 PM I'm away from my books at the moment and hoping that you can help me out. What are some good lupine creatures, playable as character classes? Other than Lycanthropes that is.

04-17-07, 03:47 PM there is actually a race called the lupin in the dragon compendium, which sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

04-17-07, 03:50 PM Well, I cannot think of any races that are LA free that happen to be D&D standard. However, other than Lycanthropes, you could do a few things.

1: Modify the gnolls to be more wolf than hyena.
2: Look at the Book Of Exalted Deeds for the Lupinal Guardinal.
3: Look at the Dog Hengeyokai from Oriental Adventures, and just say that it's a wolf, rather than a dog.
4: You could make one of your own.
5: There simply has got to be one somewhere around the races board, just search around.

04-17-07, 03:52 PM I have a race in my signature called Shapeshifter Wolf, which reptresents wolves that can turn into humans. I have another one called "Half-Wolf," based on the wolf's Monster Manual statistics, but it's on my laptop, which isn't handy at the moment.

Lupins are specialized werewolf hunters, so they may not be what you're looking for.

04-17-07, 04:29 PM IMHO lupin is your best choice for a lupine character like Banatine mentioned. It was originally in Dragon issue #325 and later in Dragon compendium.

Other good choice is to create an anthropomorphic wolf. Rules and a good table of stats can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061009a

I think they are explicitly lycan-descended, actually. It's simply a matter of taste (and selecting the right trait) to brand a given character as wolfish. If you have feats to burn, you can even eventually pick up some DR/silver.

Side note: By having the shapechanger subtype, shifters easily qualify for the Warshaper prestige class (Complete Warrior), so give that a look as well.

04-18-07, 12:51 AM There is a race is Sandstorm called i wanna say the Marru, or something similar. They're more like jackals than dogs but give em a looksie.

04-18-07, 12:55 AM The 3 Marruspawn races (from Sandstorm) have canine features (jackal, specifically). The Marrulurk is a very playable at ECL 3 (2HD, LA+1). The others have fairly high ECLs, though.

04-19-07, 08:47 PM I'd go with shifters from eberron lots of nice abilities including a rage like feature. Or you could also go with changelings from eberron and assume a wolfish like appearance plus you'd be able to change your apperance anytime you want.

They actually appear to be descended from all the therianthrope breeds, not just lycans, but you can pick traits that show the wolfish heritage. These can be emphasised by some of the shifter feats and maybe even going into the Weretouched Master Prestige class.

If what you are actually after is a roughly humanoid wolf though, Lupin is closer.
