A simple LA of -1 or perhaps even -2 (as with the Xvarts) could fix it.

That would cause more problems than it would fix. If I could start at level 2 (or 3 ) in a 1st level game, I'd play a kobold caster every time!

When looking at if a race is balanced, you have to look at the best case scenario and not the average case. People are going to tend to make characters who's race accentuates the classes strengths. So, other than for a laugh, nobody will play a kobold barbarian. Kobold rogues aren't too uncommon. Kobold casters are better still.

Comparing them to a human (with the same natural ability scores) they will have an AC 3 points higher (+1 for the Dex bonus, +1 for size, +1 natural). That coupled with small size and a 30 foot speed (a big plus), and they aren't doing so badly. The only thing keeping me from playing them more often is the -2 Con, not the -4 Str. If you were to remove the -2 Con, I'd say the race would be very good instead of okay.

Other than that, Amaril already posted the link I was going to post. Take a look there and see if you find anything useful.

While I really like the idea, as I'm playing a Kobold now, a -1 LA gives you an even +0 LA with the Draconic template, giving the following bonuses:
-2 Str
+2 Dex
+2 Cha

+2 Natural Armor

Even compared to what Dwarves get(and not including the other Kobold racial bonuses, Small size bonuses, and still retaining 30 feet speed), that's a lot. Completely blows all of the core races out of the water. Just as an example. +2 LA Half-Dragon is also quite the Beefy Buddy.

Not that I don't want it to. :D

I'm currently running a game with dragons and draconic races/creatures as the main focus and decided to use Kobolds in place of Gnomes as a main race on my world. I adjusted there stats thusly.

+2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution: Kobolds are nimble but they suffer the frailties of their size.

Small: As a Small creature, a kobold gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but he uses smaller weapons than humans use, and his lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character.

Dragonblood subtype

A kobold’s base land speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision out to 60 feet.

All kobolds add Craft (trap making) to their skill list.

+2 Racial bonus on Craft (trap making), Profession (minor) and Spot checks

+2 Natural Armor

Light Sensitivity: Kobolds are dazzled in bright sunlight or while within the radius of a daylight spell.

Favored Class: Sorcerer.

I've never been a big fan of the race's traits. They spend their entire lives digging in a mine! I doint care how small you are if you dig in a mine for a living you're going to be at least average strength.

Hard to say, because if they're that good as trapsmiths, they really ought to be engineering masterminds(not that the stat block backs that up). Between engineering & their pack-tactics, I don't really think that Strength would build up that much.

Multiple Kobolds tapping at a rock takes about as much effort as one Dwarf hammering away at a rock. I'm not really so sure that average strength will be developed in them so much.

You don't even need to be a kobold or level 5 for Pun-Pun now, he can be any race/class combination (with atleast no -int) of level 1 with Knowledge(The Planes) as a class skill...
Dragoon1

02-10-08, 02:14 AM
Havign played A Kobold druid twice without RotD, and a Paladin once with it, I'd say kobolds don't need much. A kobold fighter would be fun, the racial sub levela t L1 gives you a strength buff, they have a great AC thanks to size, dex, adn natural, and they're small but mvoe 30 ft. They have good arcanist stats, thanks to their extra dex, though the -con hurts there. Kobolds are fun, often underestimated, and of typically evil races they don't fare too bad in cilization, the lack of being a percieved threat helps, and Kobolds tend t be isolationist, and if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone, unless its Kobolds + Gnomes. Stupid Gnomes

Very true; however, no matter how you make him, Pun-Pun will always and forever be associated with the humble level 5 kobold wizard he was originally.

Then I guess it can't be said that there's nothing to work with.

Although I do wonder if, since 3rd edition, there is a list of splatbooks (even 3rd party) written for each race. I know Drow & Dwarves are fairly heavily represented.

Nice Avatar reference.

Yeah, I've played Kobolds many times. (even in AD&D, I played a kobold wizard that was killed in every single game until he was third level. :( )

Thanks to Races of the Dragon, you can now create a very powerful and fun kobold. Yes you will start sub par stat wise, the race has more negatives than bonuses. But its all in the way you role play. I have had kobolds fight UNMATCHED next to Minotaurs. Learn their advantages. (Good AC, hard to hit excellent Darkvision.) And work from there. Note: It is best to avoid martial classes. You are small, therefore cannot wield large weapons. Arcane magic (especially the flexablity of sorcerers) can turn the tide of battle very quickly. I played a Speciallist wizard Kobold, (conjurer). Its really about role playing in the end. Most people play non-standard races to Powergame. Kobolds, really can't powergame. They are played by the people who love them. For whatever obscure reason.

If you get a chance search PUN PUN (the most powerful kobold in existance.):elf:

Not true: Kobold Sorcerers are very potent, and make great Ultimate Magi. Any Kobold can become Pun-Pun, it takes a special one to become something else.

And the Con penalty can be transfered to Wis with Unearthed Arcana or the SRD.

Mmm...point. With the Dragonwrought thing and the other boosts, kobolds can be pretty powerful; however, that's like saying elves are good because they can get into Eternal Blade. A basic-basic kobold sorcerer isn't really better at it than any other Small sorcerer.

Kobold Barbarians, anyone?

I think I'll pass.
