| kuonji01-17-08, 04:34 AM | From the SRD on Spellcraft: 15 + spell level: Identify a spell being cast. (You must see or hear the spell’s verbal or somatic components.) No action required. No retry. If they can roll high enough to make the spellcraft check then they can identify the spell being cast. It will be difficult, but not impossible, for a lower level caster to identify a higher level spell. |

They could, theoretically, identify a 9th-level spell being cast (DC 28; requires a natural 20). The DC for a 6th-level spell is 21 (15 + 6), requiring a roll of 13 from our maxed-out 1st-level wizzie. This becomes easier if the caster has wasted (and I do mean wasted) feats on Skill Focus: Spellcraft and suchlike. |

Did you check your match there? 9th level spell would be DC: 15 + 9 = 24, not 28. Which would require a roll of 16, not 20. You got the sixth level spell right, which makes me wonder why you thought that the DC for a spell 3 levels higher would be 7 points higher. :thinks: |

| NerdNumber101-18-08, 09:48 PM | A first level barbarian that took a cross-class rank or two in spellcraft could identify the spell if he got lucky. Mage: :thinks: "I don't recognize the spell, it must be an obscure, high level spell." Barbarian: "It a disintagrate. Thog smash." Mage: ....:surrender |
