Hey guys,

you know, I've been thinking that lycanthropes are kinda weak. I mean, no speech, no fly/swim speed and, the most important, no access to the animal's special abilities in hybrid form, so I've came up with a few feats that might negate these problems, and probably convince you more to play a lycanthrope in your next game.

Lycanthropic Speech [Monstrous]
You have learned to speak regardless of your form.
Prerequisites: Lycanthrope, Int 13, 3 HD
Benefit: You can speak normally while in hybrid or animal form. You can cast spells with verbal components in your hybrid form, yet you still cannot cast spells with somatic components in animal form.
Normal: You cannot speak nor cast spells with verbal components in hybrid or animal form.

Lycanthropic Speed [Monstrous]
You can tap deeper into your animal nature while in hybrid form.
Prerequisites: Lycanthrope, Con 13, 6 HD
Benefit: You gain the animal’s speed modes while in hybrid form. If the animal has a fly or swim speed, you gain these modes in hybrid form, but the speed is equal to your land speed or the animal’s speed, whichever is lower. If the animal has a burrow or climb speed, you gain these modes in hybrid form, but the speed is equal to half your land speed or the animal’s speed, whichever is lower.
Normal: You do not gain the animal’s additional speed modes while in hybrid form.

Lycanthropic Prowess [Monstrous]
When you transform into hybrid form, you become a devastating combatant by using the full potential of the animal.
Prerequisites: Lycanthrope, Con 15, 9 HD
Benefit: While in hybrid form, you gain all of the animal’s special attacks and qualities while retaining your own.
Normal: You do not gain the animal’s special abilities while in hybrid form.

Potent Curse [Monstrous]
You can spread the curse of the lycanthropy easily than the others.
Prerequisites: Natural Lycanthrope, Cha 13, any evil alignment
Benefit: The DC to resist contracting the Curse of Lycanthropy is now equal to 10 + half your HD total + your Charisma modifier, or DC 15, whichever is higher.
Normal: The Curse of Lycanthropy has a set DC of 15.

So what do you think ? feel free to post your comments.

As far as I know, the hybrid form of a lycanthrope isn't prohibited from speaking, only from casting spells. (And is that even the case since the Polymorph errata?)

Change the prereq of Potent Curse to "natural lycanthrope". Afflicted Lycan's don't spread the curse.

I believe hybrids can speak / cast.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Potent Curse: I'll fix it shortly. EDIT: done

Lycanthropic Speech: Well, if you cannot cast spells with verbal components, that means you can't even vocalize a single word, hence no speech. That wouldn't make any sense: you can speak normally, but cannot cast spells with verbal components... WHAT ??? That's like saying "you can see, but cannot make Spot checks / you can hear, but cannot make Listen checks".

Hey guys,

you know, I've been thinking that lycanthropes are kinda weak. Already playing a Lycan and I get by just fine...

I know a third party resource did a feat to allow casting while in animal form, as far as I know there are no limitations for doing so as a hybrid...I'll go back over the core book and see what I can find.

Ok so this really only helps about 1/3 the possible Were races, and while not listed in core I couldve sworn a Wereshark in Hybrid form had a swim speed, as did a Wereraven in hybrid form have a fly speed...I'll check again tonight, I may be wrong...

Ok in some cases this one makes sense, in other not so much, i suppose I could see my self taking this with some Were's not just my Wolf.

I never understood why someone would want to increase the Were population, I mean it's just more competition for food and territory but I suppose this is ok.

So what do you think ? feel free to post your comments.

Already playing a Lycan and I get by just fine...Well, that was just my opinion, and again it's a case-by-case scenario, all depending on the animal you've picked. Some are great to play, others just stink.

I know a third party resource did a feat to allow casting while in animal form, as far as I know there are no limitations for doing so as a hybrid...I'll go back over the core book and see what I can find.Lycanthropic Spell from Faith and Pantheons allows you to cast spells in hybrid and animal form, but you still cannot speak, thus cannot activate some magic items.

Ok so this really only helps about 1/3 the possible Were races, and while not listed in core I couldve sworn a Wereshark in Hybrid form had a swim speed, as did a Wereraven in hybrid form have a fly speed...I'll check again tonight, I may be wrong...The template says that the hybrid uses the base creature's (humanoid or giant) speed. So if the base creature does not have a fly speed or swim speed, the hybrid doesn't gain such a speed, even if the is a fish or a avian for example. This feat is again subjected to the case-by-case scenario; your werewolf won't gain benefits, but a werehawk sure will.

Ok in some cases this one makes sense, in other not so much, i suppose I could see my self taking this with some Were's not just my Wolf.Case-by-case scenario again for this feat. You're suppose to embody the animal, but cannot trample, rake, rend or even improved grab. Not all animals have a special attack, or even a special ability, but if you want to get these abilities, it costs you a feat, which sometimes can drastically change your plans.

I never understood why someone would want to increase the Were population, I mean it's just more competition for food and territory but I suppose this is ok.Well, this feat is more for the fluff. If you're playing a curse-spreader, go ahead.

Comment's Posted...Much appreciated. Thanks.

Lycanthropic Spell from Faith and Pantheons allows you to cast spells in hybrid and animal form, but you still cannot speak, thus cannot activate some magic items. Now we are getting somewhere. This should have been brought up earlier.
1. Its 3.0 material. And FR specific.
2. It allows you to cast spells in lycanthropic animal form, not lycanthropic hybrid form.
3. You substitute animal sounds for speech.
4. It doesn't grant you speech in your lycanthropic form, singular. Since you have 2 [lycanthropic] forms, it's an error. And refers to the same animal form it referenced earlier.

The limitation on spellcasting is (or was) due to Polymorph-dependency previously, though. Since the Polymorph errata, I'm not sure whether the new Alternate Form ability still has that limitation.

And yes, it's quite possible to be able to speak but not cast spells with Verbal components. It's quirky, but there are times when it can happen.

Lycanthropic Spell has sort of been updated to 3.5E, but oddly; it was turned into a prestige class ability, though it still works the same way. (And would be perfectly viable as a feat.)

Any other opinions ?

... at at least tell me what's wrong with them.

From the Customer Service:

Q: Can a lycanthrope speak normally while in hybrid form ?

A: The rules don't say one way or the other. It is up to the DM on this one.

Feel free to use that feat as your DM can permit.
