A Few Questions for Thought... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I just have a few questions about feats:

1. Is there a place you can buy a compiled list of all the official feats published (or given the official nod) by WotC?

2. What is the potential danger of allowing a character to hold a feat (not use it at the level they recieved it) and spend it later?

3. What is the danger of allowing a character to take feats more than once. For example, why can you not take Great Fortitude twice (or more!)? I realize they are jacking that one save through the roof but are they not sacrificing much more in some other aspect of their character?

I know the first rule is have fun and I can do whatever I want in my game, and I do for the most part, but just wanted some thoughts from those of you out their much smarter than myself in these matters.

Thanks,
Goo

There is the Consolidated Feat List (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/feats) but it only contains feats from "D&D published sourcebooks". Thus I don't think it has feats from third party sources or the Dragon Magazine.

2. What is the potential danger of allowing a character to hold a feat (not use it at the level they recieved it) and spend it later?

Premature entry into prestige classes. Sudden jumps in power when a newly acquired class feature springs into being with more booster feats that following the usual procedure. Example: You can't take Extra Turning/Improved Turning feats unless you can turn undead. Someone saves up a bunch of feats until he can turn undead and then suddenly he can do it very powerfully a bunch of times.

3. What is the danger of allowing a character to take feats more than once. For example, why can you not take Great Fortitude twice (or more!)? I realize they are jacking that one save through the roof but are they not sacrificing much more in some other aspect of their character?

Take an already powerful feat like Leadership. If you allow it to be taken multiple times, suddenly you've got an army.
Take a feat like Improved Critical. If you allow it to be taken multiple times, every hit becomes a threat.

Thanks Slimgauge,

This actually reinforces my thought as far as my game goes. We are a bunch of old farts who play to socialize more than anything else. We don't optimize our characters, we like backstory and development over anything else. We don't use prestige classes much and we also rarely make it past 10th level or so before we want to start something new. So allowing someone to take feats multiple times shouldn't really mess anything up unless they start getting addicited to the power (heh).

With that being said you are probably saying to your self "what the heck is he asking for then?" and the simple answer is I just wanted to see what others had to say about the subject. The people on these boards really seem to know what the heck is happening in the game and I wanted to tap into that.

Thanks,
Goo

1) No

2) Every single build I have ever mad would be more powerful if I was allowed to delay feats until I qualified for them. Allowing this is a huge power grab.

3) Pretty much every single build could also make use of this. Who couldn't use multiple Practiced Spellcasters for a number of builds?

Well, a huge boost in power. And to be clear: I'm taking issue with your choice of the words "power grab". You make it sound so ... pejorative.

Heh, you say that like it's a huge upgrade in power. That's a pretty poor example, I'd think ... :)

1) Crystal Keep (http://www.crystalkeep.com/) has most.

2) large power explosion

3) same, but worse.

I gave you one example, the most recent in my mind.

I would love it in a build I am working right now that has CL 14th including the +4 from P.S. and if I could take it again I would have 9th level spells AND CL18. There is no way for me to get a CL that high other than taking Practiced Spellcaster twice.

My only options are expensive Karma beads and the nearly useless Ankh from MIC.

How is an extra +4 CL going to change the levels of spells you can cast?

And how do you have 9th level spells at a caster level of 11, or even 15?
