Prerequisites: Int 15 or Cha 15, arcane spellcaster level 1 Benefit: Choose one 2nd-level spell from a school that is not barred to you. You can cast that spell once per day. In effect, you have an extra 2nd-level spell slot that must be used to cast the chosen spell, and cannot be used for any other purpose. If you cannot cast 2nd-level spells yet, you must succeed on a caster level check (DC 8) to successfully cast the spell; if you fail, you miscast the spell to no effect. Your caster level with the chosen spell is your normal caster level, even if this is insufficient to cast the spell under normal circumstances. When you become able to cast 2nd-level spells, you lose the previous benefit described above. Instead, you simply have an extra 2nd-level spell slot, which you may use to prepare (or spontaneously cast, if you are a spontaneous caster) 2nd-level or lower spells as you normally would. You also gain a +2 bonus on all Spellcraft checks. Special: You can only take this feat as a 1st-level character. ----------------------------------------------------------- 1. Does Precocious apprentice add the spell to your spell book? 2. Do you have to prepare it? and if not is it a spontaniosly cast spell? 3. If the spell added to my spellbook can i prepare it in bonus slots from high int? 4. If I take the Elven wizard racial substitution level (RoW), generalist wizardry, which allows me to prepare one additional spell up to the highest level i can cast, can i use it for this spell or is that slot wasted until i learn a 2nd level spell(or empower a 1st)? |
| tarkin06-28-07, 10:14 AM | 1. It does not say it adds it to your spell book or even to your spell list. This is what I would do in a Loose/Power Game: a. The spell is not added to your list. This means you can only take spells you could cast if you were high enough (no taking a bard healing spell, even though you are not a specialist). b. The spell is added to your book/spells known. But you don't have a real 2nd level slot. 2. If you are preparer, then you have to prepare. If you are spontaneous, then you are spontaneous. It says later on "prepare (or spontaneously cast, ...", that is why I declare it to depend on your class. If you are both, you get to pick whether you are a precocious Sorceror or a Precocious wizard. 3. You do not get your bonus slots until your caster level is high enough to get at least a 0 in the slot (see bards). So the answer is no, at first level you can not cast the spell twice, no matter how high your int or charisma is. 4. Elven Wizard is a good question. Very debatable. I would rule no in a strict/loose game, yes in a power/anything goes game. |
| runestar06-28-07, 10:28 AM | 1) I would allow it, it is just 1 extra 2nd lv spell known anyways. Nice to have in the short run, and rather inconsequential in the long run. It also does not make sense as to how a wizard is able to "prepare" a spell he does not know or have in his spellbook. I have no idea about the RAW ruling though. 2) Does it matter? 3) I would say no. You do not get an actual 2nd lv slot, you are merely treated as having one for the purposes of the feat. So other benefits (such as extra 2nd lv slots from high int, qualifying for other prcs etc) should not apply) 4) No as well, see explanation above. I feel this would be the ruling least subject to possible abuse. :P |
| Skidz06-28-07, 11:20 AM | runestar: on 3: "You do not get your bonus slots until your caster level is high enough to get at least a 0 in the slot" PA : "In effect, you have an extra 2nd-level spell slot"...given that i have a virtual slot. would that make me eligable for bonus slots (thinking along the lines of virtual feats qualify for real feats, would a virtual slot qualify as a real slot?) on 4: elven sub lvl says i can prepare one additional at the highest lvl i can cast. PA says i can cast a 2nd lvl spell. and this is not so much an abuse i'm looking at, just a better way for that d4 wizards to survive level 1-3. |
| tarkin06-28-07, 03:28 PM | Ways to get that Wizard to survive. Your 2nd level spell should be one of the following: Mirror Image, Invisibility or False Life Threse three spells are the best 2nd level spells by far. Mirror Image will quickly stop protecting you against a determined foe but is by far the best in the round directly after casting. Invisibility means you can't attack any more. False Life is a significant number of hitpoints, lets you attack, but honestly is not as protective as either of the first two. |
