Hi All

I was just wondering what you all thought about allowing the able learner feat to be taken by other races (not just humans and dopplegangers). All feedback welcome.

Cheers

I don't think such a decision would be unbalancing. In fact, non-humans would have fewer skill points with which to take advantage of the feat.

It comes down to flavor, what with humans supposedly being more adaptable than all the other races. Personally, I like the idea that humans have something special going for them psychologically. But, as I said above, it wouldn't break the game to put all that aside and open the feat up for general consumption.

No. Demihumans have more than enough racial weapons, prestige classes, substitution levels, subraces, culture feats, and Vecna-knows-what else going for them. Let humans keep the precious few bones they've been thrown.

As far as mechanics go, of course it's alright. But I want my halfling to qualify for Champion of Corellon Larethian, or my human Dwarven Defender. If you take races out of prereqs, take them ALL out.

90 percent (or more) of the racial prerequisites for things don't make a lot of sense anyway. Unless it actually improves a racial trait that other races don't have (something like 'Improved Stonecunning', if that actually exists), there's no logical reason why a human can't learn the Dwarven Defender tricks or Arcane Archer tricks.

The only real exceptions are ones where the PrC is tied to an organization that simply doesn't admit members of other races (and even that could be variable based on how the DM's campaign plays out).

In fact, when I DM I explicitly drop alot of this stuff, and would probably drop any other similiar things if someone asked me to, and it didn't cause a big problem with my campaign world (i.e., I hadn't already said that all Arcane Archers are elves, and are part of some secret society, or something).

I'd be willing to extend the eligibility for the feat to half-elves and half-orcs, assuming that the creature's other half is human. If I allowed miscegenation in the first place.

(One friend to his brother the DM : I said I wanted to play a half-elf!
DM : You are. You just didn't specify what the other half was did you?

The other half turned out to be tanar'ri.)
