A question came up today about the feat Adaptive Flanker. Basically it involves a battle in a corner of a dungeon. The enemy stands in the corner with only three squares able to attack him, none of which can be flanked through. Is the character with adaptive flanker able to use a square that is essentially filled with stone to flank from?

I contended no, that he was unable to threaten anything in that square due to it not being accessible, while a player of mine thought that the he should be able to as it was a square on the grid that he was adjacent to.

I would think that since he cannot attack into that square, it being a solid section of stone, that he does not threaten it. Therefor not allowing it to be used with the feat.

Can anyone clear this up? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd have to read what the feat specifically says.
The PrC Tactical Soldier ( mini handbook ) has a flanking ability that specifically states that even impossible angles/flanking positions are possible.
They can provide extra flank square using a wall slot and even a square occupied by an enemy.

I'd have to say maybe, until I had a chance to read them both and compare.

The answer is no, you can't flank them (with one exception, see last sentance).

Adaptive Flanker lets you count any square you threaten as being the square you occupy for determining if you flank someone.

Lets pretend that instead of solid stone, the square was a hollow cube, with 1 inch solid stone walls surrounding it.

Someone in that cube has total cover from you, because there is a 1 inch solid stone wall between them and you.

You do not threaten a square that has total cover from you.

Making the solid stone 5ft thick instead of 1 inch does not change that rule. The square has total cover, you can't attack anyone in it (like say a ghost), so you do not threaten that square so you can not count it as a position for flanking.

Now, if you were in fact Ethearal, and had a ghost touched weapon then you could in fact flank them.

After reading/comparing them last night.

No, adaptive flanker would not allow for that, concur with tarkin.

If your dm allows the Miniatures Handbook, think about picking up a level in
Tactical Soldier and your all set though.
