| CrazyArtificer11-10-07, 09:25 AM | Hi, can I assume untrained labourers (1 sp/day) and have them take 10 to aid me on a particular craft skill or it must be a trained hireling? |
| Shadowfax711-10-07, 10:31 AM | No, you can't take 10 on an Aid Another check. However, the fact that the laborers are trained or untrained is irrevelant because Craft is not a trained skill. You only have to be able to use the skill and anyone can use a skill not deemed "Trained Only". |

So you'll probably want to get one or two trained guys, and then a bunch of cheap untrained guys. A person with Skill Focus and max ranks will have a +7 before adding their Int or any other bonuses. So they only need to roll a 3 or higher to successfully aid another laborer. Meanwhile, an untrained laborer has 0 ranks and is likely to have taken an entirely unrelated feat, meaning they usually actually need to roll a 10. Three untrained guys will almost always give you at least a +2, and will occasionally give you a +4 or +6. One trained guy has about 90% chance of giving you a +2. I'd say having one trained guy there, with ranks in the right profession as well as craft, is invaluable if you want to be able to keep your shop running while adventuring. But if you're playing Dollars&Doughnuts instead of Dungeons&Dragons, then lots of untrained labor is the way to go. |

Skill focus (Craft (Weaponsmithing), Skill focus (Craft (Armorsmithing). Craft check 4 (ranks)+ 3 (appropriate skill focus)+ 0 (int)+ 2 (MW tools)= 9. Auto success on aid another. You just need to buy a couple of masterwork tools and then you are ok, as you can just hire a different expert for every kind of thing you should do. According to the manual it should cost 3sp/day. Even better, your two experts are perfectly able to craft any perfect weapon or armor on their own while you adventure. Expert A takes 10, with a 19 check. Expert B aids for an additional +2. Any MW armor would be completed in 3.5 weeks + base armor cost. The cost for having the 2 guys craft a MW armor is then 50 gp (1/3rd of the material components) +14.7 gp (7 days*3.5 weeks*2 experts* 0.3 gp)= 64.7gp. Seems like easy money and well equipped party at the same time :) |
