I seem to recall a feat that added +4 to the animal companion or mount level of one of your existing classes, not to exceed your character level. Anyone remember where it is from? Or am I just making stuff up?

complete adventurer, though this only applies to animal companions, unless you have also taken devoted hunter.

Natural Bond, +3 to your effective druid level for animal companions, not to exceed your character level.

Good for Multiclass druids but who plays them? ;)

The Beastmaster PrC level 1 dip gives you a pretty good boost for your AC.

Out of curiosity, would taking Natural Bond negate/lessen the penalty for choosing a better animal companion at higher levels? (like if you chose an ape or cheetah)

I may not multiclass druids but I'd certainly do that if it worked. :)

There has been a lot of debate on this point - and I think current opinion is still divided. I would discuss it with your DM as there hasn't been a definte answer yet.
