Now, I'm a little confused. Mentor Level Modifiers table mentions modifiers based on alignment, race and skill-ranks, but what do the Modifiers actually do? Do they increase the Mentor's Character/Class Level? I am assuming so, since the text reads "...A Mentor has a base level of 5th, modified by the apprentice's Charisma Bonus (if any) and by the following situations..." Going on to list the Mentor Level Modifiers.

Now, with 'Losing an Apprentice', it states that once the apprentice reaches 5th level (how the heck they do that when it states on the previous page that a Apprentice is similar to a Cohort, except the Apprentic doesn't accompany the Mentor on adventures as a standard rule? I get that the Apprentice gains a level each time the Master gains a level, but what the hell?), the Apprentice becomes a Cohort as if the Mentor had the Leadership Feat.

Does that mean that, assuming the DM and rest of the party allow this, the PC in question could potentially have a army of 5th level Cohorts (previous Apprentices) running around? Obviously this would cripple the player's ability to travel, as spending 8 hours per week training each new Apprentice adds up, even if he/she/it trains them one at a time, but obviously this would snowball if the Cohorts/Apprentices begin taking Apprentices of their own, and so on and so forth.

I smell Cheese....

((personally, I'd never allow more than 3 Cohort/Apprentices at any one time, meaning that the PC in question might have up to 3 Apprentices at once, or 3 Apprentices over the course of his/her adventuring life))

After they become Cohorts, how do the Apprentice(s) gain XP? Like Cohorts from the Leadership feat (meaning they will reach a maximum of -2 the PC's levels?). Do they take a share of the Party's XP (I see many angry parties at this stage....) or is it a share from the Mentor PC's XP gain (Not so many angry parties)
