My Warlock has taken Arcane Mastery (CA, P. 73). If I am shooting at an enemy who has Spell Resistance, which of the following scenarios is your favorite way to handle this:

1. I blast the enemy. The DM examines their spell resistance against my caster level + 10 and either informs me that I damaged them or requires me to manually roll the caster level check.

or

2. I must state before blasting them whether I am taking 10 or choosing to roll my caster level check, in which case if I roll a low number I fail to penetrate their SR, even if taking 10 would have succeeded.

The Player's Handbook, p. 65, under Skill Checks and taking 10, does not state how this is to be handled. Their analogy is the Climb skill. A person would ostensibly know ahead of time if taking 10 on their climb check would result in their succeeding or plummeting to their deaths.

Your thoughts?

The answer is number 2. You must state, before you make the check, whether you are taking 10 or not. Taking 10 is basically just saying you rolled a 10 instead of rolling the die.

Yup you must state before you attack...So say "I'm taking 10" or roll the die.
