| Amaranth10-25-07, 03:24 PM | How are feats classified? Are they Ex abilities? Do they count as something outside the normal 3 possibilities? If anyone can point me in the direction of a RAW ruling on this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks all! :D |
| sapient10-25-07, 03:52 PM | Not really. The description of feats is not very clear on what "status" feats have. Some of them blur the line between ordinary abilities (not skills though) that a character gain through his/her experience in the trade and supernatural/extraordinary/spell like abilities. All of them can occur in the "class feature" part of class/PrC decriptions, so that indicates they are somewhat related in nature. But class features that are su/ex/sp are noted so. Actually feats are - normally at least - not in need of a definition. The bulk of them provide somekind of bonus and that's that. Some that enable new kinds of actions or combination of actions could probably - from some perspective - be seen as extraordinary abilities, if the question is forced. But that's not RAW. In RAW their neither, unless expressly noted. |
| Hsien10-25-07, 04:40 PM | I can see a need for some classification, mainly for purposes of an Anti-magic shell effect, but that's generally easy to conclude. ex: 1: Dodge/Power Attack etc..would not be not be affected as it's strictly a physical function, EX, if you must classify it and not affected by Anti-magic. 2: Reserve feats or some of the Heritage feats would be affected because they provide magical affects, SU. 3: VoP I'm not sure, but some of the benefits it provides are definantly SU 4: Crafting Feats, don't need classification imo. |
| Killydd10-25-07, 06:08 PM | In general, consider feats to grant an extraordinary ability. Exalted feats specifically state that they are Supernatural bonuses. Many other feats do specifically state that they apply either a supernatural bonus or grant a spell-like(or psi-like) ability. |
| Amaranth10-25-07, 06:34 PM | The reason I ask relates to epic material, namely the transform seed. I guess its really two issues: 1) would the feats be a derivative of "level and class" and be granted by gaining those? and if not 2) would they be considered an ability that can be "bought" for +10 DC a piece? I know this isnt the epic board, but I thought clarifying the reason for asking would help. |
| strenoth10-27-07, 12:12 AM | For the normal feat selection of 1 + 1/3 hit die, they are a deriviative of them having X number of Hit die. if you want to give feats above and beyond, I'd count them as Ex abilities usually. Even the little ones that give 3 0th level spells as SLAs 1/day each shoudl be counted as Ex abilities for transform seed. Basically, it's an Ex ability that grants 3 SLAs, which is weird, but how it works (if you assume feats are Ex). Exalted and I believe Vile feats count as SU. No feat in and of itself is a Spell like ability, some do how ever give you spell like abilities. |

Thanks all! :D Not sure where the rule is, but I believe there is one that if an ability isn't noted as a type (Su, Sp, Ex) then it defaults to Ex. I believe this rule is mainly to cover racial trait abilities (like where a Human's extra feat is in and of itself an Ex ability.) |
| BloodSpill10-27-07, 04:24 AM | Everything falls into one of four categories: 1. N/A or natural abilities. (The ability for a normal person to walk, for example) 2. (Ex)traordinary 3. (Su)pernatural 4. (Sp)ell-like/(Ps)sionic power-like The only supernatural feats are [Psionic] feats. (Eph p. 39). Everything else is neither (Su), (Ex) or (Sp)/(Ps). |
