| Dyax11-04-07, 11:34 AM | Im running out of arrows and we are deep in a mine and my DM isnt providing any arrows for me to replenish my supply. So i need to start making arrows and i have alot of questions. Can you please help me? 1:What craft do i need to use to make arrows? (fletching? or bowmaking?) 2:How many arrows can i make in 8 hours? (20?) 3:What would the DC be to make 1 arrow? (12?) 4:What would the DC be to make 20 arrows? (12?) 5:How long does it take to make 20 arrows? (8 hours?) 6:How long does it take to make 1 arrow? (20-25 min?) 7:Can i take 10 on the skill check to make arrows? (yes?) 8:How many checks do i have to make if i make 20 arrows? (1?) Thanks in advance |

Multiply your check by DC if you succeed, that is your result for the day measured in copper. Then compare to cost of arrows and that determines how many sets (if any) you succeeded in making in an 8 hour period. If it is not enough to make any, adjust cost still needed and remember you need 1/3 cost in raw mats. |

The reason I know this is because I had the same question 3 years ago, and finally had to ask for help from the Devs. Just after getting my answer from the Devs, I found an obscure quote in the PHb or DMG which talks about crafting skills and specifically uses bow making to craft arrows in the example, (it however is not sited under the craft section, or in the index, imagine that.) The DC and time it takes to craft and arrow is set by the silver peace value of one arrow which is pretty low, since I believe 20 arrows is like 1-2 gold, makinf arrows cost 0.5-1 silver peaces. Let me check the price of arrows and the craft skill again and I will get back to you. |
| 'G'11-04-07, 10:53 PM | The DC would be between 12-15 based on materials and utensils for crafting, the time it takes to craft it is set in multiples or divisions of weeks, and works this way. Assuming you are trying to make one arrow costing 0.5sp. You gather 2cp worth of material, and have the apropriate tools and supplies available. you roll your Bowmaking skill check versus the dc, let say it is 12 for this illustarion. you then roll a 24 adding your ranks of bowmaking skill. This is double the DC. Since one arrow cost 1/2 a silver this means that instead of taking 1/2 week to make one arrow it would only take 1/4 of a week, or 1-2 days per arrow. The higher you can beat the d/c the less time it will take. And each day is considered an 8 hour work day. This means that unless you are really going to pump a lot of points into bowmaking, you will probably never be able to craft more then 1 arrow a day. But if you are travelling, 10 hours a day, that still gives you time to craft arrows while at rest, or dungeon crwling 1-4 hours a day and then healing up for the night, again another 8 hours is free to do something such as craft an arrow. During travel it would go like this you ride and then craft for 4 hours during your camping sesion while on watch, and craft an arrow every 2 days. assuming you double the DC on you r skill check, this doesn't seem like much, but if you are in a long indepth campaign and travel great distances and many days in one gaming session then you can just roll your check the number of times that days has gone by and walla you have a bunch of arrows, made while traveling. This is the kind of thing that fills out the dead time that you know your character would be doing something, other then just stiring the ashes of the camp fire every night. I agree this is kind of contrived, but this game wasn't really designed around crafting mundain items. In reality a master Bowyer in the middle ages could craft a yew long bow (the gold standard of the middle age warfare) in a little less then 30 minutes, in this game even if your skill is high enough to more then double the d/c it will take a week or more. I don't know how many arrows they could make in a day, but I am sure that it was far more then 1 in an 8 hour period. |

Craft (bowmaking) will make the shaft (PHB p70), but you probably need Craft (fletching) make the arrows from the shafts. 2) Craft in copper and you make 20 shafts if your-roll*DC/100 >= 1.0, then the next 8 hours to make 20 arrows from the shafts and feathers. 3) You make 20 or none, unless your DM allows 1 at a time. 4) DC would likely be 12, ask your DM. DC remains the same 20 or 1 (if DM permits 1.) 5) 16 hours (two days i.e. 48 hours) minimum with two craft checks both at 9 or greater. 6) 16 hours (see #5) even if your DM allows 1 at a time. In other words a craft check is a minimum of 8 hours, period. 7) Yes you can take 10 on a Craft if not distracted, ask your DM if you are distracted. 8) 2 checks (one for shafts, one for arrows) |
| Dyax11-05-07, 05:54 PM | Now thats what im talkin about! Thanks Risner |
| blade26511-06-07, 04:55 AM | I would be interested to find out if you had all the components to craft the arrows,:D particularly the shafts and feathers. |
| 'G'11-07-07, 02:41 PM | Just te reiterate, there is no Fletching skill in 3.5, only bowmaking, which covers fletching. I will see id I can find the CR quote and copy it here. |
