Will this not work because it's now an 8th level spell, or is the Auto-Quicken based upon the base spell level and not the one modified by the metamagic? |

Will this not work because it's now an 8th level spell, or is the Auto-Quicken based upon the base spell level and not the one modified by the metamagic? a split-ray disintegrate is effectively an 8th level spell, so no, Auto-quicken can't affect it (unless you take the feat again) |
| WinDReiN04-21-07, 06:49 AM | A wizard would have to prepare it as a 8th lvl spell in advance, so no. A sorcerer would cast it as a 6th lvl spell, quickend, but modified with a metamagic feat Split ray, and thus cast it as a full round action and burn an 8th lvl slot. So no in either way. |
| runestar04-21-07, 11:01 PM | Are you saying that a lv 12th wizard with only 12 int would not be able to cast a twinned scorching ray as it is treated as the equivalent of a 6th lv spell? |
| MareltEkiran04-21-07, 11:18 PM | I'm sorry, but the PHB disagrees with that ruling. PHB, page 88: In all ways, a metamagic spell operates at its original spell level, even though it is prepared and cast as a higher-level spell. The description of auto-quicken specifically states that it applies to 0th and 1st level spells... not "spells prepared in 0th or 1st level spell slots." Of course, you'd have to take the feat 6 times in order to quicken disintergrate... (according to Complete Arcana, which is the only 3.5 source of the feat) and it's an epic level feat. At that point, game balance has been thrown out of the window anyway. |
| NoldorForce04-22-07, 01:04 AM | Keep in mind that the current one-spell-level-per-feat setup makes it useless; something like even two spell levels per feat would be more appropriate. Additionally, a number of books after Complete Arcane have ignored the nerf, writing up NPCs who use the old SRD versions of the feats. |
| runestar04-22-07, 01:28 AM | I agree, there is no point taking the CA version of auto quicken when you could just simulate it by taking improved metamagic three times, ISC and quicken half your spells. |
