| PEBKAC03-10-07, 11:16 AM | I have a planar campaign coming up and need help looking for a feat. I seem to recall a feat the helped resist or prevent Banishment and Dismissal but I can not find it anywhere. Does any one know what feat this is and what book it’s in? Any other advice for feats or skills for a plane hoping campaign would also be appreciated. We will be starting out at ECL 5. |
| ClementWillowbreaker03-10-07, 05:20 PM | You are pretty much stuck with something that replicates Dimensional Anchor/Lock. A lodestone that prevents the carrier from being teleported against its will. Either that, or be willing to cough up a lvl4 spell every time you see an enemy caster. No item leaps to mind, as it would rather tricky to price except as the ever-popular command word activated wondrous item. |
| The Simbul03-11-07, 04:12 AM | Technically dimensional anchor will not prevent banishment, nor will its ridiculously underpowered 8th level1 counterpart dimensional lock. By definition Banishing a creature is not the same as teleporting them, nor is it listed among the spells or types of spells prevented by a dimensional anchor. As for a feat that will help in resisting banishment, I would actually suggest Iron Will. I am not being sarcastic or belittling the situation, I am mere suggesting the most obvious route, and a feat that helps against many more things than a handful of specific-use spells is far better than a feat that is wasted on a single potential hazard. More importantly, banishment is not exactly the worst thing that can happen to a creature. There are FAR worse things that can happen to a character when they fail a saving throw against a 7th level spell. Characters aught to take feats that allow them to resist death or mind-affecting effects long before they contemplate a feat that gives them a defense against 1 spell in the PHB, and one which is hardly encountered or optimal. Rather than looking for a feat, I would instead invent/invest in a modified version of a bracelet of friends, that could function across planes. 1dimensional lock is "8th" level thanks to an error in Magic of Faerun, and thanks to editors of subsequent books that reprinted the spell without ever checking the errata of the original source. |
| ClementWillowbreaker03-11-07, 01:37 PM | Magic of Faerun is 3.0. Thus, its errata does not apply to the 3.5 PHB, which lists Banishment as lvl8, since it is a latter reprinting, and especially because it is a core book instead of a hyper-overpowered-setting-specific one. While Dimensional Lock/Anchor does not list Dismissal, it does specifically say it blocks all extradimensional travel, then a list of examples. It doesn't counter those specific spells and only those spells. You cannot deny that Dismissal involves extradimensional travel. If you allow it, then a lvl4/5 spell cast on yourself negates a lvl7/8 spell's ability to trap you. And Dismissal was already pretty handy to cast on yourself. Also note that Blink, Etherealness, Ethereal Jaunt, and Shadow Walk are not conjuration nor teleportation spells. So the fact that Dismissal is an abjuration doesn't matter. |
| Daeva03-12-07, 05:59 PM | there is a feat in unearthed arcana called naturalized denizen which removes the outsider trait and treats you as a local to whatever plane you are on making you immune to jaunt and displacement, and banishment and what not. |
| PEBKAC03-13-07, 01:01 PM | Thanks for the information. The feat for Unearthed Arcana is the one that I was looking for. After going over things, it turns out I may not be taking the feat afterall. If you have any further advice for a plane hoping campaign, please fill free to share it. |
