| cato07-01-07, 08:42 PM | I am looking for some advice on picking feats for a mind flayer character. Some nice choices so far could be ability focus and extend reach, anyone looked into the matter? |
| Chimaera200007-02-07, 04:27 AM | I personally like Improved Grapple if you're hoping to play up the brain-sucking goodness. Both of the feats you mentioned are pretty solid. Improved Initiative is a great feat for most any character too. |

Hrm a mind flayer has improved grab, is improved grapple helpful in that case? the +4 is nice, but the player was kinda thinking of using dex as a dump stat |
| Radijs07-02-07, 06:21 AM | Well thats not a problem since you use STR to grapple. |

| SunTzuWarmaster07-02-07, 07:53 AM | Correct me if I am incorrect: 1 - Mind flayers eat brains it they have a grappled opponent. 2 - Improved Graple give +4 on grapple checks (which is 20% chance of success vs. a flat DC and a bit more on an opposed roll). Any feat that lets me kill opponents 20% more or 20% faster is a feat I am going to take. BTW, look at Illithid Savant, it is the best prestige class ever. It's abilities are: "you level up after every opponent you kill, sometimes multiple times per battle." |

Grab some tentacle extensions from Underdark and keep a potion belt of Extend Tentacles on you. That's +15ft reach, with a possible Huge size (giving you a base 15ft reach+4 Str bonus+8 size to grapples for 90minutes/day)! Oh yeah, I love the brain eating guys. Though, a character I made was a Half-Illithid, and made use of the Illithid Body Tamer prestige class from Underdark. I think he was a Fighter/Warmind/Body Tamer. Though, as you're a full illithid, I'd be recommending Savant, as you said. But remember you only get ONE ability per level. You can probably forget things and gain abilities later, but only to a maximum of one per level. |

If you want to go the physical route, you'll want Extended Reach, Improved Natural Attack, and Improved Grapple. Even still, you'll have a tough time grappling an equal-level fighter. I think a better strategy is to focus on the flayer's psionics. Try Overchannel and Psionic Endowment to start out. Reason being is that you only get 9 psion levels out of a 15 level flayer, so you have to play catch-up if you are going to meet the will saves you will be up against. Cloak of charisma and a headband of intellect should be on your list. Remember, mind blast keeps them from fighting back, but it doesn't make it any easier to grapple for the brain-eating coupe de grace. |

Allows you to "pinpoint" any creature within the range of your telepathy. you know race, HD type and int score, plus a few others. You know what square, but has total concealment unless you have other means to see them. Your mindflayer will never be snuck up again, short of mindblank. |

Can you use overchannel and similar feats with innate psionics like those of the mindflayer? |
| OrganicAngelAlexiel07-05-07, 12:06 AM | Can you use overchannel and similar feats with innate psionics like those of the mindflayer? If you use the psionic variant from the EPH, which has innate telepath levels, then absolutely. |
