| Shadowed106-04-07, 12:45 AM | This weekend, over a couple bottles of wine, I got into a very lengthy conversation on what are the best "overall" feats for wizards. Yes, I know very few nowadays would even think of playing a straight Wiz20 but in the spirit of the idea, tell me what you all think. Just a straight Wiz 20 no PrCs. Human. Have at it. |
| Loki565406-04-07, 01:03 AM | It could be said that a Wizard is only as powerful as the spells in his spellbook. Thus a feat which gives extra spells per level is most valuable. Collegiate Wizard (Complete Arcane pg. 181) all the way. |

Collegiate Wizard (Complete Arcane pg. 181) all the way. i would have to agree...I would say after collegiate wizard...hmmm :plotting: I really took a liking to the reserve feats. I would say those come in at a close second. I cant tell you one in particular cause it depends on your wizard type. Are you a :w: generalist? :r: Evoker? :b: Necromancer? :u: Illusionist? etc... (side note):whatsthis I know a lot of people down play a straight wiz 20...but the funny thing is, the last game I ran (which was eberron) my friend played a straight 20, and was quiet passably one of the most powerful people there. Those extra feats really do add up. and to make matters even funnier, NO he didnt take collegiate wizard...no he didnt take reserve feats (even though the books where out by the time he was like lv 8 or so). He took your standard greater spell focus (evocation), max spell, empower spell, etc. kinda stuff and just dominated.:mage: So yeah, I have to second the above statement... A wizard is only as powerful as his spells...NOT his feats, NOR class levels, NOR skill selection. (unless he didnt take Concentration, spellcraft, and Know (arcane)) |

Yes, this leaves rods, staves and rings for other feats, but none of them have the versatility of wondrous items, and you can only use two rings at a time, so why bother? Almost every other feat there is exists in item form. |
| Psikerlord06-04-07, 06:21 AM | If you play eberron, action surge and spontaneous casting. Action surge gives you the ability to get an extra standard action, for an extra spell per round (or whatever else you want to use your spare standard action for: activate item, move again, etc) and spontaneous casting lets you cast any spell from your spellbook, in substitution for a prepared spell. Both cost 2 AP's to use however. |
| CantripN06-04-07, 07:10 AM | I try to get Collegiate Wizard, Alacritous Cogitation, Empower Spell and Quicken Spell for all my Wizards... |
| Spellfire_junkie06-04-07, 10:46 AM | I am a huge fan of Collegiate Wizard also. Where can I find Alacritous Cogitation? |
| CantripN06-04-07, 10:50 AM | Complete Mage |
| Gnarl06-04-07, 12:52 PM | My personal favourite is Arcane Mastery. It doesn't look like much but unless you're playing in a high power game or a very large group, this feat rocks. |
| kjenks06-04-07, 01:04 PM | Empower Spell Twin Spell Quicken Spell ...and blast your way to greatness. There are many different types of wizards. If you're a blaster, you need feats like those, and you'd say that "Empower Spell is the best overall wizard feat." But if you're a summoner, Empower Spell is pretty much useless for you and you want Augment Summoning and other such feats. And if you're a diviner, you want other feats. Craft Wondrous Item is good for almost all wizards, but that depends greatly on what magic items are available for purchase in your campaign and how willing you are to fall behind the XP curve compared with the other PCs. So there's no one answer for you. |
