Hi have been playing dnd for the last two years. Have built quite a few characters in those years but the that has been foxing me is the rogue/wizard. The spells part is easy but i am struggling with the feats. Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated

dndmaster07,

General ideas for feats...

1. Experienced caster. Likely a good way to get your spell casting level high enough so that duration isn't so much an issue.

2. Improved Initiative. Good for both rogues and spellcasters, so doubly useful for rogue/wizards.

3. Weapon Focus, Point Blank Shot, Weapon Finesse, etc. Since your BAB is typically pretty low, you might consider feats to help improve your ability to hit.

4. Silent Spell or Brew Potion. Casting spells at one level higher might hurt, but there are times when you want cast without noise. Often you are scouting and nothing gives away your position faster than casting spells. It is also extremely useful if you have silence with you. Brew potion is an alternative -- drinking potions is typically quiet, but you can't get as many spells into potions.

5. Skill Focus (Concentration). Casting in melee becomes an issue and often it is hard to get concentration high when you are multi-classing.

I think #1 was supposed to be "Practiced Spellcaster"

I never heard of "Experienced Spellcaster"

I would also say that Silent Spell is not the best choice for a Wizard, even a Wizard Rogue. You rarely know ahead of time when you will need it.

Better to take the feat Sudden Silent Spell, and perhaps to get a metamaic rod of Silent spell.

Practiced Spellcaster is what any multiclassed caster wants.

Other than that, feats that are good for a rogue will still be good for a caster/rogue.

Feats that are good for a wizard will still be good for a wizard/rogue.

hmm, i suggest to get practiced spellcaster, with a whole bunch of metamagic feats, spellcasting is more important than combat feats.

Well, there's a couple ways you could do this.

I like to utilize Sneak Attack at least somewhat, so have Ray (ranged touch) or Touch spells (if you are brave) so you can get Sneak Attacks.

Grease + Attack of some sort = Sneak Attack damage (a balancing target without 5 ranks in Balance is denied dex bonus).

For Feats, I too would say Practiced Spellcaster is a must, if you will have 2 or more levels of Rogue. I would also suggest Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot, so you can fire ranged spells (and weapons) into melee without a penalty. If you go the Ranged Touch Sneak Attack route, then PBS gives you bonuses (you have to be within 30ft anyway...). Many casters don't go with Precise Shot, figuring that Touch AC is easy enough as it is, it is your choice.

What (if any) Prestige Classes are you looking at?

For ranged spells I find the Spellwarp Sniper Prestige Class to be great - you can prepare a Fireball and change it into a Ray for Sneak Attack damage and/or the ability to negate the Reflex save of your target if there is only one you are interested in taking down fast. Memorizing straight Ray spells is more effective usually, but less versatile. They also are full caster, and get some Sneak Attack-like abilities which stack with normal SA and some other things.

EDIT: If you want to go sort of equal in both classes, stagger them to maximize your skill rank potential. Take first level in Rogue for most skill points, and max the Rogue skills you want. Then take a level or 2 of Wizard and train the Wizard skills. Then back to Rogue and with your high INT you should be able to max your Rogue class skills again, rinse and repeat.

Able learner if you are a human. This way, you can take rogue1/wizardX, and still max out your key rogue skills effeciently.

Alternatively, go beguiler.

No love for the arcane trickster? It's the only of the class combo Prc's we've allowed in our campaigns. It's not bad.

I still don't see the usefulness of improved intiative, especially if your character already has a high Dex score. You can just refocus and get an edge in on combat. Quick Draw...now that's a useful feat that can give you a sneak attack with a sleight of hand check.

But surely take rogue as your first level. That's a lot of skill points!

I think everyone loves the Arcane Trickster. Great class.

Anyone who can get extra damage when their opponent is flat-footed has a great reason to take Improved Initiative. Anyone with low hit-points has a pretty good reason to take it as well. Rogue/wizards meet both of those.

The Quickdraw option is good for a melee rogue, or a throwing rogue, but a wizard rogue doesnt really need a weapon. He has lots of spells with which he can make ranged-touch attacks, hit more often and still get SA.

Or maybe you could hide a charged melee touch attack and your robe and deal sneak attack damage!

The spells part is easy but i am struggling with the feats. Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated

Here are the feats I used for a recent campaign that I played as a Rog2/Wiz6/SWSniper5/AC5.

Point Blank Shot
Precise Shot (free from Spell Warp Sniper)
Practiced Spellcaster
Acidic Splatter (nothing beats having a range touch attack all day long)
Craft Wonderous Item
Mobile Spellcasting (this feat rocks for keeping you out of the enemy's LoS)
Heighten Spell (up the level of acid spells to 9th to enhance Acidic Splatter and other spells to up the DC value)
Empower Spell (free from a campaign reward).
Improved Initiative
