If you initiate a bull rush, you and the defender make opposed Str checks right, but if you lose then you get "bull rushed" back into your square and fall prone. Would Combat Stability or Shield Ward grant you the bonus on the opposed Str check? |
| RobbyPants08-15-07, 09:55 AM | According to the SRD regarding Dwarves (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/races.htm#dwarves): Stability: A dwarf gains a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground). So, according to this, it applies to the ability check (which in this case is an opposed ability check). According to the SRD regarding Bull Rush (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#bullRush): <snip> If you fail to beat the defender’s Strength check result, you move 5 feet straight back to where you were before you moved into his space. If that space is occupied, you fall prone in that space. So basically, yes, abilities like Stability will give you a bonus on the opposed Str check for the Bull Rush, and if the defender wins, the attacker is repelled back five feet. If that square is occupied, he falls prone. |

No, you don't get "bull rushed." Here's what the rules say happens if you attempt a bull rush and lose the opposed check: If you fail to beat the defender’s Strength check result, you move 5 feet straight back to where you were before you moved into his space. If that space is occupied, you fall prone in that space. It doesn't say the defender bull rushes you in return. It doesn't say the defender does anything to you. It simply says you move back to where you were before. So...no, feats like Combat Stability and Shield Ward, which grant a bonus on opposed checks to resist bull rushes, do not grant their bonuses when you attempt to bull rush someone. (For that, you need a feat like Improved Bull Rush.) |
