| Peregrine_Wolf04-18-07, 04:00 PM | The title is pretty self-explanatory. My DM is sending up against a ton of elementals, and I was cusious as to whether my wolf companion could trip the elementals. If so, things could get REALLY fun ;p |
| CantripN04-18-07, 04:08 PM | Certainly you can. But bear in mind that Earth Elementals might just fall through the floor and reemerge elsewhere, Air Elementals can just swish away, as can Water Elementals and I rather doubt you can trip Plasma, so no Fire. In short, no, you can't really, except for Earth Elementals and possibly Water Elementals. |

If so, things could get REALLY fun ;p Sure you can trip an elemental, it's a creature like anything else. There are a few criteria you need to ask yourself tho. 1) You just have to determine if the creature has legs and not amorphous. 2) What happens if you trip a flyer. If you think they have legs and/or you can trip a flyer like an air elemental, then the answer is yes. Otherwise, it's just up to the DM. |
| InsanePsychoRabbit04-18-07, 04:17 PM | You could probably trip a relatively solid elemental, like an Earth or Ice Elemental (which even has legs as a miniature), but one made of pure energy or relatively insubstantial (like a fire, air, or smoke elemental) is a no-go. You could probably make a case for being able to trip a water elemental. |
| Peregrine_Wolf04-18-07, 04:35 PM | meh...that's what I thought, but my DM said roll your str check for trip....so I did |
| SALDAR04-18-07, 07:18 PM | Yes, you can. They are not incorporeal and as such are just a solid as any other nonincorporeal creature. There are exceptions though. I can't recall exactly where it is discussed but the tripping rules for flying and swimming creatures are a little different. Tripping a creature means you are taking away that which the creature is using to physically support itself and putting that creature in a prone position. You can knock someone off their feet (physical support) and to the ground (prone). You cannot trip a flying creature that does not use wings for flight as there is nothing being physically used for support so you cannot take anything away. You cannot trip a swimming creature because the water is supporting the creature. This means that an air elemental can never be tripped as it has no land speed, it is always flying. A water elemental has a land speed and a swim speed so it can only be tripped if it is not swimming. Earth elementals have a land speed and earth glide, but since earth glide is used to move and they can only move on their turn. They cannot use earth glide to immediately sink into the ground and avoid the prone condition, they have to wait until their turn before gliding. Fire elementals only have a land speed so they can be tripped. |
