Is there any sort of rule on using chain spell and buffs?

For example, if I use CLW and heal someone 10, could it chain and heal anyone else I wanted it to, 5?

You can chain any spell that specifies a single target and has a range greater than touch.

So CLW won't work -- it's range is Touch.

Alright, I guess I'll have to do Reach + Chain.

Thanks.

At which point you could probably just cast Mass Cure Light Wounds.

Seriously though, there are some great buffs that work with Chain spell. Greater Magic Weapon and Keen Edge come immediately to mind (note that Magic Weapon won't work, since it is a touch spell; Greater is a close range spell.) Also, Enlarge and Reduce Person can be used with this feat, although Mass versions of these already exist. (I know the Mass version of Enlarge person is 3 levels higher, but can't recall if Chain spell increases the level by 3 or 4). Levitate can work with it. A glance through the spell compendium can probably net a dozen such spells.

A Chained Knock could be cool too.

I was thinking for a cleric more than wizard. DMM(chain or reach{whichever has the highest slot cost}) that way I could cure or buff from afar.

Note though that a Chained, Reach spell takes up a slot 5 levels higher.

Thus, a chain, reach cure light wounds is a higher spell (and not nearly as effective due to the caster level limits on the healing) as a Mass Cure Light Wounds.

Yes you could do DMM to achieve this at lower levels, but thats four feats you would need, and thats fairly hard to come by for low level clerics. I know theres some feat in the PHB II that lets clerics heal from a distance though.

my incantatrix uses chain in his dual enervation wand combos. it puts a lot of hurt down very fast to an awful lot of things.
