Benefit: When generating ability scores by random rolls, you roll an additional die. You still only select three from the selection. When generating ability scores by point-buy, you have an additional 6 points to spend. This is just an idea I've been toying with recently. I'm still a little unsure about how many points it should grant in point-buy, but I think I've got the general gist of it. And before anyone asks, Heritage feats automatically can only be taken at first level. |

| RobbyPants07-05-07, 12:38 PM | Just a bit of a nitpick: Don't you pick feats after generating ability scores? :P As a general rule, I'd say increasing ability scores with feats is a bad idea. What you might be able to get away with is a +2 on certain types of checks, or maybe even a +4 on very specific rolls. For example, if you want to represent someone strong, maybe a +2 on bullrush and grapple checks might be more appropriate. Even the grapple seems a bit strong, though. |

And rolling an additional die can be the difference between a 13 and an 18 - for each stat. This is far too powerful for a feat. |
| Findail07-05-07, 05:01 PM | I was toying with a similar idea, but with one important caveat: you couldn't have any ability scores below 12. For rolled characters, bin the whole set of rolls if the lowest isn't 12 or better. For point-buy, force the character to buy 12's on his lowest stats (i.e. no "dump-stat"). Also, do NOT allow the character to take Flaws. The result represents a character who is more physically and mentally "perfect" than a normal adventurer, but it's still difficult for him/her to have really high scores in just one or two abilities (which is what most adventurers would prefer). |
| Yue Ryong07-05-07, 08:24 PM | Ok, I get it, this is a bad idea. Fair enough. That's what I get out of making feats at 4am. |
| The_Mighty_Mintzy07-09-07, 04:27 AM | I remember a feat called Legendary Trait which gave you a +1 bonus to one of your stats every six levels. The feat description read something like "you possess potential beyond normal" or something like that and I think it had a prereq of the stat you wanted to boost a 15 or 17. I'm not too sure where I read it, but it kind of does the same thing: gives a good back story for someone with an exceptional bloodline. I hope it helps, its hard to think at 4:27 in the morning without... nevermind. |
