how does that work? seeing how technically cleaving a foe is slicing them in half with the kinetic energy transfering over into an adjacent opponent. But spears are piercing so wouldnt cleave with a spear technically blow through the backside and strike an opponent behind the now dead opponent? Could it be possible to house rule, or maybe create a new feat that allows to stab the spear into an opponent 5ft away, blow through and hit the opponent behind him? If anyone is still confused, please tell me and ill try to re elaborate.

Cleave is simply a name, it works with any weapon. In a round, characters slash and parry with their opponents many times, damage is simply a representation of their effect. This means that every time you roll a "hit", you could have actually slashed at a guy three or four times in your turn.

As for cleave, you're simply getting a good hit on one opponent and then flipping around to hit another.

To restate, Cleave works with any weapon, no matter damage type.

The feat's name just gives one example of how it might be used. In general, it just reflects the ability to use the momentum gained when you down a foe to attack another foe.

hmm, but would it still be possible to blow through and hit a person behind? not so much as cleaving, but possibly doing enough damage to an unarmored person would provoke a blow through attack maybe. Interesting concept?

You mean PC A stab through NPC B and hit NPC C behind B? Like, a skewering feat?

Might work, though it wouldn't be nearly as useful as normal Cleave.

Maybe as you lodge the tip of the spear into your foe, you bend the shaft forward such that it curves. As your foe falls, the edge bursts free of his body and swings into the enemy standing beside him?:D

Btw, you can slash with a spear if the blade is long enough.

true as well, i mean look at it this way what if there was a feat not just for spears but for all weapons in general that said:

The momentum of your strikes passes through the enemy and into a secondary. As a free action the player may call a "insirt feat name here" strike in which he is treated as having 1 more strike that round. This strike does not require a new roll, instead it uses the roll of the previous strike before this at a -4 to hit an adjacent foe, or a foe behind a foe if the weapon has reach.

almost like the bows many shot except you wouldnt get a new attack roll

The bow's many shot feat is not hitting multiple targets with one arrow but being able to shot multiple arrows at one time.

The general definition that we tend to associate with cleave is to slice through as if by cutting (it's the most used and well known), however, one of the main definitions of Cleave is simply 'to penetrate or pass through' "The bow of the boat cleaved the water cleanly" (definitions and information from http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=cleave)

And as to the idea of a 'piercethrough' feat might be to create a Tactical Feat based on spears...
One of the three tactical advantages being:
(InsertNiceNameHere,IKindaLikeShiskabobM yself): When you kill an opponent with a spear, you may make a free attack against an opponent that was directly behind the slain opponent. The target must be adjacent to the square(s) that the opponent was in, must be directly on the other side of the slain opponent's square(s) from you, and must be within double the reach of the spear you used. The target of this ability is considered flat footed, but you do only half damage, rounded down. You may do full damage, but if you do, you must end up in the nearest square that the slain opponent was in.

Cleave is just a title, don't read to much into it.
Theer's plenty of good Kung Fu movies that show spear fighting styles, which will show that essentially achieve a "cleave" effect....and great cleave.

Now start thinking of other weapons, since a character can "cleave" with any weapon; although Power Attack is a pre-req for feat there is no implied weapon restriction as with PA. So Cleave with....
Dagger, Unarmed attacks, Club

Isn't it called penetrating strike or something like that?

Firedale i laughed when i read your post because i was thinking of the same name,

DM: "enemies are closing in on you what do you do?"
Player: "I SHISH KABOB THEM!"

As far as penetrating strike ive never heard of it, ive heard of penetrating shot in PHII but that only works with bows. If it does exist i highly want to know where so i can grab this feat, cause once i do its shish kabobs all around, but if not could always just mimic the Penetrating shot, and require Short Haft from the PHII
