| GreatEye03-17-07, 03:54 PM | If a player attacks with a Martial Strike (Tome of Battle) and drops his opponent, can he then cleave into an adjacent foe? (If he has the Cleave feat) If so, does he get to repeat the additional damage and/or special effects of the Martial Strike on the 'cleaving' second attack? How does this work? |
| tarkin03-17-07, 03:57 PM | Cleave results only copy the BAB value. Nothing else, despite a poor wording that seems to imply you get everything else. For all other things besides BAB, it is considered 'your next attack'. So no, they don't get the Martial Strike benefits. |
| Shado03-17-07, 04:20 PM | They would, however, gain the benefits of martial boosts (which generally give a bonus for the characters whole turn and not just one attack.) |
| Tempest Stormwind03-17-07, 06:45 PM | It helps to look at the feat's rules instead of thinking "what if", since the rules answer the question. If you deal a creature enough damage to make it drop (typically by dropping it to below 0 hit points or killing it), you get an immediate, extra melee attack against another creature within reach. You cannot take a 5-foot step before making this extra attack. The extra attack is with the same weapon and at the same bonus as the attack that dropped the previous creature. You can use this ability once per round. So, I use Rabid Wolf Strike to attack at my full base attack with a +4 bonus, dealing additional dice of damage. It drops the opponent. Thanks to cleave, I get an extra attack. This is a normal attack at the same attack bonus (that is, full +4, since Rabid Wolf Strike dropped the opponent), but it only deals normal weapon damage and has no other effects, since it's an extra attack. If I had used a boost that affects all your attacks for the round (like, say, Burning Blade), that attack would have the effects of the boost, though. It's not like cleave says that your attack affects a second square or anything. It'd need to be written like the war mind (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/warMind.htm)'s sweeping strike ability. |
