Actually, it can gain levels. It's an intelligent creature, and can gain class levels as normal.

That's what I thought. But our DM thinks he knows everything and insists non-humanoids can't gain classes. I admit something like a Nightmare with wizard levels would be kind've stupid but there are other things like barbarian or fighter that aren't so hard to imagine.

I recommend you show your DM page 290 of the Monster Manual, where it goes over how to add class levels to monsters.

01-23-08, 04:02 AM Adding class levels is allowed, but if your DM can't be convinced, another way to go is just advance the nightmare's HD.

That was my original question. Our DM keeps claiming there's no way to do it without throwing off balance. Personally I think he's just whining.

then adding a HD or two to a nightmare isnt nearly so bad by any yardstick
