| Fanix211203-04-07, 11:35 PM | Hello everyone, I have a question about Con checks. If I am concentrating on a spell, and make it, what other actions can I make in the round, if any? If I am concentrating on a spell, and I fail its check, can I make any other actions in the round? |
| garou8503-05-07, 02:20 AM | no a spell, unless otherwise noted takes a whole turn. Talk to your DM and read about some feats, but aside from that your stuck wether it works or not. |
| Novacat03-05-07, 02:33 AM | Hello everyone, I have a question about Con checks. If I am concentrating on a spell, and make it, what other actions can I make in the round, if any? If I am concentrating on a spell, and I fail its check, can I make any other actions in the round? I suspect you're confusing terms. Concentrating on a spell (such as for spells that require concentration to have effect, or whose duration is "Concentration") do not require any check. Normally, you only make a Concentration check when circumstances are less than hospitable, such as violent motion or threatening enemies. However, in the event that you are required to make a Concentration check to successfully cast a spell, and you fail, the spell (and the action required to cast it) is lost. I recommend that you read up in your PHB on this subject, as it's fairly well spelled out there on pages 69-70, 170, and page 176. |
| Fanix211203-08-07, 12:53 AM | Alright, hows about an example, and I dont have my books on me. In Tome and Magic the Truename spell Word of Nurturing says: 'Deal 1d6 dmg, and another 1d6 if you concentrate" And the Planar Shepherd's Planar Bubble says something about being able to concentrate for up to 20hours. Now I was hopeing to find out for examples like these if I were to still do a Standard or Move action. From what I have heard it sounds like I would be able to do both as long as I state im concentrating, and make checks if I get damaged or something. |

Now I was hopeing to find out for examples like these if I were to still do a Standard or Move action. I don't know about any "Planar Shepherd", but the Truenamer's utterance is effectively a spell with a duration of Concentration, up to 1 round. Concentration The spell lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when casting a spell can also break your concentration while you’re maintaining one, causing the spell to end. You can’t cast a spell while concentrating on another one. Sometimes a spell lasts for a short time after you cease concentrating. Concentrating on a spell is a Standard Action. Core spell examples include Detect Magic and Detect Evil. |
| Kouk03-08-07, 02:38 AM | If a spell's duration is listed as concentration, it takes a standard action every round to maintain concentration. You still have a move action. Concentrating to maintain doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity, but if someone hits you on their turn while you plan to continue to concentrate on a spell, you have to make a concentration check or you will stop concentrating, and the spell ends as if you stopped concentrating voluntarily. If you are casting a spell normally, and someone hits you with an AoO or you are in a distracting situation like in the middle of a big storm, you make a concentration check to ignore the distraction and continue with the casting. Most spells are standard actions, so you would still have a move action left. If you choose to make a concentration check to cast defensively and avoid attacks of opportunity, this isn't itself an action, just part of the casting of the spell. If you cast a spell with casting time of one standard action defensively, it is still a standard action. If you cast a full round spell defensively, it is full round etc. SRD -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You must make a Concentration check whenever you might potentially be distracted (by taking damage, by harsh weather, and so on) while engaged in some action that requires your full attention. Such actions include casting a spell, concentrating on an active spell, directing a spell, using a spell-like ability, or using a skill that would provoke an attack of opportunity. In general, if an action wouldn’t normally provoke an attack of opportunity, you need not make a Concentration check to avoid being distracted. If the Concentration check succeeds, you may continue with the action as normal. If the check fails, the action automatically fails and is wasted. If you were in the process of casting a spell, the spell is lost. If you were concentrating on an active spell, the spell ends as if you had ceased concentrating on it. If you were directing a spell, the direction fails but the spell remains active. If you were using a spell-like ability, that use of the ability is lost. A skill use also fails, and in some cases a failed skill check may have other ramifications as well. The table below summarizes various types of distractions that cause you to make a Concentration check. If the distraction occurs while you are trying to cast a spell, you must add the level of the spell you are trying to cast to the appropriate Concentration DC. If more than one type of distraction is present, make a check for each one; any failed Concentration check indicates that the task is not completed. Special: You can use Concentration to cast a spell, use a spell-like ability, or use a skill defensively, so as to avoid attacks of opportunity altogether. This doesn’t apply to other actions that might provoke attacks of opportunity. The DC of the check is 15 (plus the spell’s level, if casting a spell or using a spell-like ability defensively). If the Concentration check succeeds, you may attempt the action normally without provoking any attacks of opportunity. A successful Concentration check still doesn’t allow you to take 10 on another check if you are in a stressful situation; you must make the check normally. If the Concentration check fails, the related action also automatically fails (with any appropriate ramifications), and the action is wasted, just as if your concentration had been disrupted by a distraction. A character with the Combat Casting feat gets a +4 bonus on Concentration checks made to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability while on the defensive or while grappling or pinned. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Fanix211203-08-07, 03:00 PM | Thank you so much, I have been trying to properly understand everything about spellcasting and concentration. You guys make my life so much eaiser, thank you again. |
| SunTzuWarmaster03-08-07, 09:49 PM | Okay, so lets say that I want to cast a Silent Image spell (whose duration is concentration), to make it appear as though I had a halo (or something else). Concentration is a Standard action, right? Can I walk along the path with the party at my normal base land speed while concentrating on the spell? Let's say that I am level 10, with 14 ranks in concentration and a +5 mod (min roll is a 20), can I take 2 move actions in a round while still concentrating? Can I take 2 climb or ride actions (assuming those checks make)? Can I run normally? Can I talk to others normally? Can I make a spot check for the monster in the bushes? |
| Kouk03-08-07, 11:11 PM | Concentration is a standard action, so you can do whatever swift, move or immediate action you feel like. Now can you do a quickened spell while you are concentrating on another spell? I think so. |
| Despana03-09-07, 12:47 PM | Now can you do a quickened spell while you are concentrating on another spell? I think so. Look under the quote Novacat provided. It says you cannot cast a spell while concentrating on another one. No free/swift/immediate spells while concentrating (on a spell). Okay, so lets say that I want to cast a Silent Image spell (whose duration is concentration), to make it appear as though I had a halo (or something else). Concentration is a Standard action, right? Can I walk along the path with the party at my normal base land speed while concentrating on the spell? Yes, up to your normal speed (30 feet for a human). Keep in mind that when walking around hallways and such most people (that I play with anyway) use double moves to get places. Let's say that I am level 10, with 14 ranks in concentration and a +5 mod (min roll is a 20), can I take 2 move actions in a round while still concentrating? Doesn't matter what your concentration check is, it still takes a standard action. Can I take 2 climb or ride actions (assuming those checks make)? Can I run normally? See above. Losing your standard action will preclude those. Can I talk to others normally? Can I make a spot check for the monster in the bushes? Talking (to a point) and reactive spot checks are free actions and thus are unaffected by losing your standard action each round. |
