How does it work when you qualify with for example Wizard caster level 11th or even Spell-Like ability with caster level above 11th, but you are using the feat as for example Cleric 3rd level to prepare contingent spell from 2nd level? (multiclass wizard/cleric or cleric with SLA high enough). Do you count caster level with which you have qualified or actual caster level you are using for crafting? Is it covered somewhere in rules? I don't want to metageme just want to be sure what is correct. Thanks |

When you go to craft a contingent item, or any other item, the crafter can decide the caster-level at the time of creation. The only rule is, he cannot lower the caster-level below the minimum for casting the spell. (I could not make a contingent Dispel Magic at a caster-level 4. You have to be at least 5th-level to cast that spell. [normally]) So, even though I am an eleventh-level cleric, I could make a contingent Cure Light Wounds as a first-level spell (healing 1d8+1 points of damage.) or I could make it at 11th level, (healing 1d8+5, a bit wasteful.) The caster-level I choose determines the variables related to caster-level, range, duration, etc. The caster-level I chose determines how effective the spell is in some cases (a fireball at caster-level 10 is more powerful than one a caster-level 5.) In addition, the caster-level determines how easy effects generated by the item are to dispel or break and whether or not the effect can penetrate SR. |
