Ok so I got the idea to make a comparison of the Iron Defender and an Effigy Dog. Very similar creatures. Both small "dog like" beings. The big debate against Homunculi is that you take a 2d10 hit when they get destroyed. So I said "Well you get Craft Construct soon enough why not just make a Dog Effigy and be done with it?" So I stated it out. Here's the comparison:

Iron Defender
Small Construct
Hit Dice: 2d10+10 (21 hp)
Initiative: +2
Speed: 50 ft. (10 squares)
AC: 17 (+1 size, +2 Dex, +4 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 15
Base Attack/Grapple: +1/ -1
Attack: Bite +5 melee (1d6+3)
Full Attack: Bite +5 melee (1d6+3)

Special Attacks:-
Special Qualities: Construct traits, darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +2, Will +0

Skills: Listen +2, Move Silently +3, Spot +2
Feats: Weapon Focus (bite)

Mats cost 75gp.
Craft DC 14 (metalworking)

Dog Effigy
Small Construct
Hit Dice: 1d10+10 ( hp)
Initiative: +3
Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares)
AC: 16 (+1 size, +2 Dex, +3 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 14
Base Attack/Grapple: +0/ -3 <--***Not correct? Help?***

Full Attack: Bite +3 melee (1d4+3) <--***Not correct? Help?***
Space/Reach: 5ft./5ft.
Special Attacks:-
Special Qualities: Damage Reduction 1/adamantine, Construct traits, darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision,
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +0, Will +0 <--***Not correct? Help?***
Abilities: Str 17, Dex 15, Con -, Int -, Wis 11, Cha 1
Skills: -
Feats: -
Evironment: Any
Organization: None
Challenge Rating: 1
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral.
Advancement: None.
Level Adjustment: -

Construction:
Made of wood, leather, metal, and wire.
Mats cost 1,000gp.
Craft DC 15 ( woodworking, leatherworking, or metalworking) or Knowledge DC 15 (architecture & enginering)
Caster level = Hit Dice of effigy.
2,000 gp + 80xp

Iron Construct has better damage output, better skills, and Possibly better saves (I'm a noob at getting all this straight so any help or corrections are MUCH appreciated). On the other hand the Dog Effigy gets damage reduction, a better strength score, and doesn't make your appendix suddenly explode when it dies.
As far as the crafting cost/time/xp their -fairly- close. You pay 750 more gp but 13 xp less. You don't have to emulate any spells making the Dog Effigy but the craft DC is a point harder. Now my calculations on the Dog Effigy aren't complete just yet due to my lack of experience in this area (heading into DM land from long time Playerville) so please if you can, gimme a hand on those, but all in all, I think the Dog effigy and the Iron Defender are pretty much equal.
Thoughts, views, pancakes?
^_^
Also, I'm gonna go ahead and stat out an Wolf Effigy to see what the next step up would be. :)

When you do their saves, you are consistently leaving out the stat adjustments.

All creatures get their Dex modifier applied to their Reflex saves. Dex of 13 = +1 to saves. Dex of 15 = +2 to saves.

Wisdom goes to Will, Con bonus goes to Fort (but if Con is -, you get neither bonus nor penalty)
