Why is their XP costs for crafting items?

Somethings like ring of three wishes I can understand, but a flaming great sword?

Throughout my experience in life I found out that after creating or fixing an item I came out with more knowledge/experience then when I went in.

The charector already has to waste days to create his item while the party is out adventuring gaining exp so why would anyone even want to take the feats if they have to loose out on adventuring and being at a significant exp loss for it?

Does anyone wave the exp loss for general items?

I totally agree with you. But WotC's argument is that when you making some magical items, you give part of your essence into the item to make it work. That's kinda bs. However, the reason they are doing it is to limit people from over creating items much the same way they limit people casting wish by imposing xp cost.

Personally tho, I houserule you neither gain nor spend xp when making items.

Actually, I kinda remember that you used to get XPs for crafting stuff in 2nd ed. Yeah, but the only reason that crafting cost XPs is balance. They don't want your Lv 20 wizard churning out items like a factory.

One option is to take a variant of the Craft Point system. Drop the XP save for in situations where it fits (Using spells that have XP costs) and have them spend craft points.

Simply have a maximum number of craft points (I'd say use the Total from levels increased by the ones with the feats) and add a recharge mechanic to craft points (1/day or so).

I don't quite understand you. You got a link with this system in details?

In 2e you also lost Con points permanently when you made a magic item. Compared to that XP loss is nothing.

2nd ed also made it a HUGE quest to make magical items.

Ok you have to take this pheniox feather, that was willingly given to you by a old pheniox, to the highest peak in such and such mountain range and then have to struck by lightning and fuse with this stick that had fallen off the worlds oldest oak tree to create a wand of cure light.

Craft Points (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/craftPoints.htm) are from Unearthed Arcana and are originally meant for spending bits of time crafting things. What I suggested modifies that to replace the XP component with Craft Points that slowly recharge while things using spells with high XP costs keep some amount of it (Otherwise you may see large numbers of things like Scrolls of Wish and the like.)

There is a feat called "Legendary Craftsman" that reduces the xp invested by 25%.

My new character is a dwarven master craftsman who will become a battlesmith later. So I'm reading up on what I can do about crafting items ect . . .

I think that xp costs for making magic items is crap also, however there seems not to be a chance of failure for crafting things. If you have all the stuff, and a decent place to work, pay your costs - and you just do it. I started playing original D&D in the mid 80's, and you gained xp for making magic items in that system, but there was a chance of failure. Some formula that took into account the spell level of the item, your level and casting ability score. So you could spend your time/money and get nothing, but if you succeeded you got xp equal to the gp cost of making the item.

anyway, I'm going to do the best I can with the system we're in, and it's unlikely I'll spend much time crafting things for other people.

Yeah ... colossal pointless pain in the butt.

The good news is, if you use the 3.5 XP system, it self-corrects and you earn back that XP you spent faster.
