| Asok06-07-07, 09:35 AM | Hello everyone - I tried searching for the answer, but I wasn't able to find exactly what I was looking for. Anyway, my problem is that I'm confused by the crafting rules when using special materials. I want to make, specifically, is a Mithral Breastplate. It's pretty easy to figure out the DC check for normal armor - 10 + armor's AC bonus. Where it gets strange is when making something masterwork. As reference: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/craft.htm The masterwork cost is treated separately from the normal cost and has a DC 20 check. Ok, I can live with that I guess (or at least I can follow the rules) even though it seems strange. Ok, there's the real problem - how does this factor in for special materials? By default, mithral armor is considered MW. Does that mean the mithral part of armor would have a DC check? Using the mithral breastplate example, the best estimate I can come to with the rules is that the base armor is a DC 15 check and is worth 200 GP. The "remaining" mithral part is masterwork, has a DC 20 check and is worth 4000 GP. Is that right? That seems odd to me and I think I'll just say the whole thing is a DC 20 check and is worth 4200 GP. Thanks for any advice or comments. |

| CrazyArtificer11-11-07, 08:28 AM | sorry for resurrecting this thread. However I have the same question. Shouldn't one just make a DC 20 check on the masterwork part (150 gp) and then add the remaining mithral cost? |

DM can do it any way they wish, but the suggested way is to: DC10+AC for total cost - 150 DC20 for 150 (masterwork cost) So for 4,200 gp Mithril Breastplate: DC15 for 4,050 gp DC20 for 150 gp If you don't succeed on both, you don't have an item. |
| elonin11-11-07, 09:49 PM | Isn't there a feat that allows the character to craft masterwork? Also, my memory is poor on this subject but craft check dc is 10+ac with the amount you beat the dc by in copper peices? |
| ArchmageOmega11-12-07, 01:05 AM | It's only in cp if you do the checks per day, which is really pretty silly when doing it by the week is counted in sp. The math on that really doesn't add up making it much slower and more error-prone to work by the day. Also, anyone with craft can craft masterwork items. It just raises the DC. |
