Could the combination of the skills craft weapon smithing and craft musical instruments help make a fiddle cross bow per say.

Sure. That is part of the fun of the game, making wacky stuff.

As stated about the item in the proper forum, you can't actually make a crossbow fiddle, even in Rube Goldberg land because the two devices can't be combined and still be both devices.

Going solely on your crossposting, I would say no.

So the opinion is that the structural integrity and design function of this item would be as such that it would not allow the item to function as both. In the real world I would agree with that. In a game that has magic as an acceptable answer to a given question though I have to disagree.

The game has a magical double longsword that acts as a longbow as well. If that item is acceptable under the concept of "it's magic" then so should a fiddle that acts as a crossbow.

I don't know anything about that, but thinking about it, it is still more plausible than a crossbow fiddle.

How so? I would think that a longsword blade would be a lowsy place to string a bowstring. A fiddle would probably be more acceptable as a shortbow, but I see nothing wrong with allowing one to be a crossbow.

For purposes of fun, I could see saying yes, but if I wanted to be realistic, I'd have to say no. Of course, how much of this game is realistic anyway? It's not like your request is game breaking or anything (although it would look wierd :P).

Blades are not always sharp in all places, true long swords are double-edged, but it could be notched at a point to not be sharp to string the bow there.

So notching the tip of the blade (and thus reducing it's integrity) to allow the use of a bowstring is more realistic then a fiddle that is also a crossbow?

Let's get a little more into detail on what we are comparing here.

A double sword whose blades magically curve (like a scimitar or sabre) to be used as a longbow and allows the user to make ranged and melee attacks in the same round with the same weapon and, as a bonus, they do not provoke attacks of opportunity for making ranged attacks from adjacent foes. This weapon is believable, but the crossbow/fiddle isn't.

Yes, notching part of a blade is far more feasible than a crossbow fiddle.

Yes. A crossbow isn't magical. You have to put the mechanisms somewhere. So even if you ignore that fiddles are strung up the body meaning the strings of the instrument itself couldn't be used in the crossbow, you still have to recognize that the mechanisms would be going inside and through the fiddle screwing with its very operation.
But like I said a plain shortbow fiddle is plausible.

A notch someplace lower on the blade maybe, but putting a notch up at the tip is asking to snap the tip of your blade off.

The mechanism of the crossbow (ie, the trigger system) could be a very simple lever actually in the neck of the fiddle, or the neck of the fiddle itself. The bow could fold against the body of the fiddle and lock into place when in use and bolts would be fired along the back of the fiddle. Statically I don't see it being much better than a hand crossbow (maybe a light crossbow), but I do think it is possible to accomplish.

1) Unlikely.
2) Why would you do that?

You people should just use a bloody shortbow fiddle.
How could bolts be fired along the backside of the fiddle? How is the crossbow going to be held or loaded without ruining the instrument? The neck isn't exactly supposed to be sturdy and I doubt would be able to hold the pressure of a crossbow.

You can't just put a tiny notch in the blade. The string would still rub the edge and you would end up cutting your own string.

Nobody said that it wouldn't need re-enforcing and modification. I am just saying that it is not impossible. It really isn't that far of a stretch of the imagination...especially in a game with magic and gods of crafting and gnomes that can make life-like clockwork dire lions.

As to using the fiddle/shortbow combo I do agree with that, just see no reason to limit a players ability to have fun.

Is a crossbow-fiddle really wierder than a dire flail or a gnome hooked hammer?
I don't think so.

Weirdness and feasibility are a bit different, which no one is taking into account.

Then please explain it to me how a dire flail or a gnome hooked hammer is feasible, without hurting the wielder.
