| unundindur01-19-08, 09:04 AM | Is there any official way to have the dagger as a monk weapon? If not, would it be a fair feat, as the ebberon feat that makes long sword a monk wepaon? Naturally I am thinking of creating a monk-based assassin, and as such the dagger would be "the" weapon. Thanks. |
| Cartigan01-19-08, 09:10 AM | Monks are proficient with daggers  |
| rjsilverthorn01-19-08, 09:53 AM | Monks are proficient with daggers  True, but I assumed he meant 'monk weapon' as in a weapon a monk could use with flurry of blows. Considering the Eberron feats will let you flurry with things like a polearm, I don't think a dagger would be particularly unbalancing for a feat. |
| Cartigan01-19-08, 10:02 AM | Then what is wrong with a Kama or Sai? |
| unundindur01-19-08, 10:30 AM | Then what is wrong with a Kama or Sai? They are not cool, and incredibly rare to find (in north-west Faerun). |
| The_Shaman01-19-08, 12:11 PM | Maybe you might want to give them variant monk weapons to fit the setting? Dragon already did that. Also... OA extended the monk weapon proficiencies and the monk weapon list, so I think you could do likewise. What order is the monk from btw? |
| Cartigan01-19-08, 12:20 PM | They are not cool, and incredibly rare to find (in north-west Faerun). Then why would Monks be common? |
| unundindur01-19-08, 01:20 PM | Then why would Monks be common? Monks are not common, but I still want to play this... |
| rjsilverthorn01-19-08, 01:39 PM | Monks are not common, but I still want to play this... Well I guess its going to come down to the character your are playing. If you are native to the area you are playing in, then it would not be unreasonable to ask the DM to expand the weapon choices to include some regional weapons. If you are from a more traditional area and simply adventuring in this region, then you'd likely be limited to the traditional monk choices. |
| pigknight01-19-08, 01:39 PM | In my campain settingmonks from a spicific city can use flurry of blows with a scythe, and I thought that they could flurry any weapon they were proficient with and unarmed strikes. |
| rjsilverthorn01-19-08, 01:44 PM | In my campain settingmonks from a spicific city can use flurry of blows with a scythe, and I thought that they could flurry any weapon they were proficient with and unarmed strikes. When using flurry of blows, a monk may attack only with unarmed strikes or with special monk weapons (kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, and siangham). Outside of that there are a couple feats that let a monk flurry with unusual weapons like the double-sword, long sword or a polearm. |
| LunarWolfPrime01-19-08, 05:27 PM | Hey if they allow kukries why not besides their is a feat out their called unorthidox flurry which would allow it any way I think it reqs weapon focus though? I will check on that ok!:D |
| The_Shaman01-19-08, 06:01 PM | Then why would Monks be common? They got retconned in when 3E came around, and now they've been around for hundreds of years ;) They are usually affiliated to some church or another, mind you. Anyway, realmsian monk orders tend to be rather lax on multiclassing and a few other things already, though, so they use of a dagger as a monk weapon should not be a serious problem. There is precedent for this: the sun soul monk PrC already allows you to flurry with a light mace. 3+ levels of Shou Disciple solve the problem as well. And yes, the Dragon Magazine feat is fine as well. I'd allow it, and I hope your DM either allows it or allows you to choose the dagger as a monk weapon instead of any of the others. |
| Fabius Maximus01-19-08, 07:30 PM | They weren't retconned. There were monks in the FR since 1st edition, IIRC. |
| Cartigan01-19-08, 07:42 PM | They weren't retconned. There were monks in the FR since 1st edition, IIRC. Uh, yeah... http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=retcon |
| Shadowhowler01-20-08, 12:11 PM | The Monk Weapon List is the biggest bullcrap to begain with. Why the hell would EVERY Monk... regardless of reagion or philosophy... ALL train with the same weapons??? Ugh. The Monk Weapon list from the PHB seems to be more Japaness influenced... see Kama, Sai, and Nunchucks... although how the siangham got in there... an obscure Mylasian weapon... I'll never know. I allow Monk's special weapons to be costomized to their order. A more Wushu influenced Monk would use Spears and swords and other weapons not covered in the PHB Monk's selection. Monk's got hossed... I'm often surprised people still want to play them. |

| pigknight01-20-08, 07:13 PM | And monks are not proficent with unarmed strike. |
| The_Shaman01-20-08, 07:25 PM | They weren't retconned. There were monks in the FR since 1st edition, IIRC. I don't have 1st edition FR material, but I certainly don't remember seeing them in 2nd. And I do mean the martial arts monks, btw, not monasteries containing cloistered clerics, adepts and the like. |
| LunarWolfPrime01-20-08, 08:07 PM | Is thish what you are looking for: Unorthodox Flurry You are trained in a monastic tradition that uses nontraditional weapons. Prerequisite: Flurry of blows ability. Benefit: Choose one light weapon. You become proficient with that weapon and can use it as a special monk weapon. You can use your unarmed base attack when striking with it, including your more favorable number of attacks per round. You can also make a flurry of blows attack with this weapon. (You cannot choose a light exotic weapon unless you already have proficiency with that weapon.) Normal: Without this feat, monks only gain these benefits with specific weapons: the kama, siangham, or nunchaku. If you ever have feat probs look here http://realmshelps.dandello.net/datafind/feats.shtml or Crystal Keep I hope this helps you out man. |

Well, the only difference between the Monk class in that book and the 3e Monk is the lack of spellcasting ability in the latter. Everything else went right into the new class: Unarmed combat, AC bonus, alignment requirements, etc. And yes, 1e had a Monk class. |
