Useless.

"Re-roll any 1s in your sneak attack damage"

This changes the sneak attack from an average of 3.5 per die to an average of 4 (not even that, actually, because you only re-roll the 1s once). That's an average of half a hitpoint of extra SA damage for every two levels of rogue.

What were they thinking? Sounds great ... to anyone that can't do math but can remember rolling a handful of 1s some time in the past.

Deft Strike, however ...

I would like to know if people here would consider applying this feat to precision damage from the Order of the Bow PrC

Well if my math didn't get very bad that's roughly 3.92 per d6 instead of 3.5 with a 20 th lvl rogue that would be 4.2 points of damage per succesful attack dealing SA damage that's about twice as good as weapon specilisation, considering it's more specialized i consider it balanced with other feats(excluding some very strong ones as natural spell...), and stronger then quite many...
So much for my little mathematic journey ;)

Edit: I don't consider the feat strong, but since you pointed on the math I couldn't resist...

Bonuses to hit to not scale smothly in the way that damage bonuses do. The amount of extra damage you get depends totally on the AC of the thing you are trying to hit.

Let's graph (avg damage with bous to-hit/avg damage without bonus to-hit) by the score you need to-hit and the amount of bonus, taking into account that you always miss on a 1 and always hit on a 20.

As you can see, bonses to hit become very important when you need high numbers to hit, peaking at 20. Penalties also become very important when you need a 20, but behave slightly differently. All in all - bonuses and penalties matter when there are a low number of distinct die rolls that hit.

So bonuses to damage and bonuses to hit don't behave the same way. For a rog, who has 3/4 BAB, to-hit bonuses are way more important than a small amount of extra damage.

Useless.

"Re-roll any 1s in your sneak attack damage"

This changes the sneak attack from an average of 3.5 per die to an average of 4 (not even that, actually, because you only re-roll the 1s once). That's an average of half a hitpoint of extra SA damage for every two levels of rogue.

It's another one of those feats that many DMs will have a knee-jerk-unbalanced reaction to which isn't.

Still, it's a below-par feat. At level 7 with 4d6 Sneak Attack damage, that's an average of +2 damage per hit. Weapon Specialization with limitations anyone? At level 13 with 7d6 Sneak attack damage, that's an average of +3.5 damage per hit which puts it on par with the epic feat Improved Sneak Attack (ISA sucks that much...). At level 19 with 10d6 Sneak Attack damage, that's an average of +5 damage per hit.

Another step up the ladder is Sacred Strike (Book of Exalted Deeds) which essentially gives an extra +1 average damage per Sneak Attack die against evil creatures.

Finally, there's the top of the ladder with Craven (Champions of Ruin) which provides a very powerful bonus when Sneak Attacking although it comes with some strings attached.

Deft Strike, however ...

Deft Strike is not a great feat IMO once you have multiple attacks per round. Giving up a whole round of attacks for assurance that a single attack will hit is of limited worth. Maybe when combined with an Assassin's death attack or something similar... but otherwise it doesn't seem so great.

Thank's for the heads-up - I had not realised that it was a standard action. I was thinking one round to observe, then feint as a free action (invisible blade class feature), deft strike + staggering strike for the first attack, and then the rest of my sneak attacks (including at least one arterial strike) while the opponent is staggered.

Craven is worthwhile, and what's more fits the character concept (halfling raised as a domesic slave).

How about Giantbane, from complete warrior? If you have climbed aboard a creature, do your attacks count as sneak attacks? I want to climb aboard a dragon, hamstring it's wing, and pick it to death with sneak attacks.

Nope. Only Death from Below would allow it since that part makes the enemy flat-footed.

Well since weapon spec itself doesn't give anything to to-hit your table is absolutly useless here :p, unless I totally miss your point(which wouldn't be that uncommon for me ;))

Craven is friggin sweet. How often do you get SA?1/2?1/3? To add 3 damage every thee levels is almost like adding another dice. You can almost double your average damage with this feat. Just be careful with the penalty.

A Deadly Precision weapon adds 2d6. That's an average of 7 points, the same as what Craven will give you ... at level 14.

Still, I'm looking at Staggering Strike, and every little bit helps the DC.

Reread Craven, you don't understand it yet.

At level 14, you'd get +14 damage per Sneak Attack made.

At level 14 with a Rogue 1/Fighter 13, you'd get +14 damage per Sneak attack made. Character level, not class level remember. ;)

A lot of people hate Craven because the way it's written it's:

Not Sneak Attack/Precision Damage
Multipliable on a critical hit
Based on character level and not class level
Selectable at level 1

Of course, a -2 to will saves vs fear along with a Rogue's weak will save and Wisdom usually being a dump stat for Rogues... basically means if someone even twitches angrily in the Rogue's direction he runs away. :P

That's ok. My rog is a runaway domestic slave so it's all good. Wish I'd known about the feat when I built the character, but we can say that he has become even more twitchy now that he is adventuring.

I have a 18 lvl Fig/Rog/NtSngEnf, with Craven, Staggering Strike, GrTWF, Deadly Precision, weilding deadly precision, keen scimitars. I voluntarily dropped multiplying the Craven damage as it was getting obscene quite early in the game. imo, Craven is the perfect feat for Fig/Rog types, Iron Will and vest of resistance wouldn't go amiss either.

Our DM is allowing us to purchase 1 feat in exchange for XP every second level. OMFG. I indend, however, to develop my Rog's dragonmark (a mark 'o healin). It's good mechanically, and it's also great as a plot arc: the escaped domestic slave turns out to be a member of a dragonmarked house.

The other option I was looking at just now was kukri for the extra crit range, and telling blow, improved/power critical etc. I'ts still an option, even without the kukri. I want to keep this guy a pure rog, but a dip into fighter would be awesome. Sigh.

Anyway - I don't want this rog to be melee only. With an int of 16, he can max out Bluff, Tumble, and Spot (for the combat routine) and still have enough points for rouge-y things.

The best thing is he is one of two Duergar brothers i am playing at the same time, and we are not the party rogue. so no ranks in open lock etc, let me max out Tumble and MSilent etc. They spin around the battle like little flank-monkeys. Untill one runs away like a girl courtesey of Craven.:weep:

Can we please start kicking people out who claim things are broken?

Nothing in D&D is broken if everyone at the table is taking advantage of it.

Why people say it is broken:

Two reasons, A and B

Reason A:
"Wow, this game is so boring. Everyone plays the same couple of characters, and either we easily kill the monster in 1 round, or we get trounced and have NO way to affect the monster".

When you screw with balance, you rarely do it evenly. That is, you might make the Wizard REALLY powerfull, but leave the fighter a piece of crap that can't do anything.

Also, it becomes MUCH harder for the DM to judge your power. If you are so much more powerfull, he can't say "5th level, let them face a CR 5 creature." Instead he has to work really hard to either adjust the power of the creature on the fly, or figure out what level you are equivelent to.

Reason B:
"You know, my 5th level Fighter just took out Tiamat." (Actual quote from back in 2nd edition).

If you persist in using House Rules to make yourself more powerfull than people in other games:

1) You quickly become arrogant because you keep killing things far beyond your level.

2) You make fun of other people because those weaklings are fighting things like say, monsters with a CR of 5.

3) You think you know tactics and are an effective player, when in truth, all you know is the most obvious ideas that most people think are silly and don't want to hear about.

4) When you play in a regular game (like say a Living City game, or any WoTC approved tournament) you suck, AND get all huffy that they won't allow everything you think should work.

In other words, ifyou play with lots of things that other people call "Broken", but don't KNOW they think it is broken, you become a rude, obnoxious, ignorant, player that mistreats people that actually know how to play using the game rules as intended.

Still I do agree, don't call it broken.

That is why I use my four terms. If something is too powerfull for a Loose game, I label it Power Gamer rule. If it is WAY too powerfull, I say it is appropriate for an Anything Goes Game.

Can we please start kicking people out who claim things are broken?

Nothing in D&D is broken if everyone at the table is taking advantage of it.

First: Read previous posts before posting. (especially with quotes)
In this way, you could have discovered that I was asking for an explaination. It sounds broken, I haven't said anything about being broken. If you use houserules, feel free to do so (we do it too). It is your game and as long as it is enjoyable, by all means, do so. Only my experience with houserules is that it leads much faster to an unbalanced game. And an unbalanced game gives usually trouble.

Second: Think before posting.
In that way, you might have come to the same reasons as Tarkin and I, although Tarkin was nicer then I was, giving the full explaination.

@Tarkin: thnx for your explaining

  Can we please start kicking people out who have an opinion/idea of their own? :uh-huh: :surrender

I'd actually like to hear the houserule for buying feats for XP. That is the kind of thing I might use in my "high powered" game.

Consider it a lucky charm against bad rolls, then. I know some players who roll 1s a lot more than others. No, it doesn't make sense; yes, the statstician inside of me weeps to say this.

This is one of few feats that can turn a potential TPK into a victory, in that it might be the difference between dealing 10 damage on a sneak attack and dealing 60. It's kind of like Power Critical.

There will always be people who want that little extra bit of comfort, even if it's not a "strong" feat.

:D

Our DM is allowing us to purchase 1 feat in exchange for XP every second level. [snip]

I played in a campaign where the DM allowed us to buy feats with experience, buy skill points with experience, and buy feats with skill points. I was playing an astral deva using Savage Species rules (adjusted to 3.5), and he got a ton of skill points, so I bought a feat as often as a I could. It was sweet.

What????? howmuch XP???? this sounds rediculous broken.. Plz explain..

Advancing a level takes 25% more XP than otherwise. Yes, yes, it is broken. I know. So what. We are all adults with jobs, playing a game on Saturdays, so what's the harm? It's not like a competition or anything.

Why is it broken?

I'm pretty sure it isn't broken if everyone does it. It might cause trouble with challenge ratings.

Well, my character is the only one using it at present. It's just a matter of being low key and not irritating the rest of the group or the DM.

Well you have to give it to NPCs too so they can keep up with PCs.

That's ok. My rog is a runaway domestic slave so it's all good. Wish I'd known about the feat when I built the character, but we can say that he has become even more twitchy now that he is adventuring.
I'm going rog/warblade - with "Moment of Perfect Mind" and dumping a lot of skill points into concentration. Craven starts to lokk good again ... but not from a fluff POV. Dang.
