When a PrC requires "ranks" in a skill....do feats that add a bonus to a skill count as ranks ??? or is it stricktly the skill points you have spent in that skill???

Example: Wildmage requires "Spellcraft 8 ranks".....which you would need to be 5th level to attain.

It also requires the feat "Magical apptitude" which gives a +2 to spellcraft.

So could a character with 3rd level caster....with Magical aptitude still meet the requirmements for this PrC ???

No, it doesn't. Your max rank in a class skill (assuming that you solo classed) is 3+lvl

That's what I thought.....
Thanks Muktar.

But talk it over with the DM. Feats like Skill Focus I would probably allow (depending on the class in question I guess) because you have invested effort in using that skill as if you had put ranks into it.

And that is the point the other player was trying to make....hence the debate:D

Ranks are used as an entry requirement in nearly every prestige class. Sometimes these are redundant with other requirements, in terms of when you can first join, but other times they are not. In this latter case, allowing Skill Focus to count as ranks completely changes when you can actually enter a prestige class. I can guarantee that this will open up new abuses. It is, by and large, a bad idea.

There is no debate. Ranks are used to set the minium level of entry to enter a PrC. cheating that means your getting PrC abilities at levels that are not intended for that level and may very well break the caimpaign.

Is that like saying Weapon Focus should increase your BAB for the purpose of meeting prerequisite and class requirement? :bored:

Ranks are just that, RANKS! not skill modifier, ranks.

U use skill points to increase your -rank-, not your skill modifier. Skill focus is a misc skill bonus, similar to that of ability modifiers.

Ranks requirements are there to hinder an elf with skill focus spot and +4 in wisdom to achive a PRC that requires 8 RANKS in spot to get it at lvl1. It can not be achived before reaching lvl 6 (because the skills comes after choosing a class, and therefore needs to be at needed rank before taking the prc)

And no, im not angry, grumphy or agitated.:P
