dex and cha, dex or cha, or just dex... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm playing an iaijutsu master, and was considering marshal, and marshal has an aura that states "motivate charisma: bonus on charisma checks and charisma based skill checks" and that is equal to the characters charisma modifier

And then iaijutsu master has "an iaijutsu master of 2nd level or higher adds her charisma modifier to her initiative checks aswell as her dexterity modifier"

Now my question comes, would cha and dex to initiative make it a dex and cha check, for purposes of of the minor marshal aura

would it be dex+cha to initiative, or dex+cha+cha to initiative

I figured this forum would be best, over the class based one, as this one involves almost every check other check in the game

My verdict is that you would only get it once. So it would be dex + cha.

Is there any rule behind this, anywhere?

only once, the marshal's boost to CHA checks does not boost a Dex-based check that has a bonus from a class feature.

If Init is all your interested in, the Marshal also has a Dex boosting aura that would apply to your Initiative.

Now if you had an ability that let you replace a ability modifier with another one...like Tactile Trapsmith replaing Int with Dex on disable device checks, or Weapon Finese using Dex instead of Str on melee attacks. THAT would be debatable.

dex+cha to initiative

An initiative check is a Dexterity check (1d20+Dexterity modifier).

An iaijutsu master ... adds her Charisma modifier to her initiative checks, as
well as her Dexterity modifier.

Adding her CHA modifier does not make initiative a CHA check.

Alrighty... I was just curious what defines something as a check of that ability score.

Initative is not a Cha check (or a Dex check) but rather an initiative check.

So Init = 1d20+dex mod+cha mod

The Marshal motivate wouldn't help an Initiative check.

A Dex check is "DM to player: roll me a dex check and let me know what you got." Basically an ability check is something that doesn't exist in the game and the DM creates on the fly PHB p66.
