| Cadwyn04-11-07, 06:29 PM | I'm sure I read somewhere about a feat that lets you use Dex instead of Str on grapples...not sure if it is in a Wizard Certified book or a homemade thingy, but if anyone knows of such a feat, let me know |
| WinterPsionic04-11-07, 06:56 PM | you can use Dex or Str to escape a grapple...i don't know about initiating it with such. |
| Cadwyn04-11-07, 07:01 PM | for clarification, I meant dex to every grapple check |
| MikeN04-11-07, 07:45 PM | Sounds like a homebrew feat, from someone who's never been in or even seen a real wrestling match. Of course, this could then degenerate into how D&D's stats aren't really that relative to real life, but that ground's been covered before. |
| UnknownMourner04-11-07, 07:56 PM | If someone had Weapon Finesse (which allows their unarmed strikes to hit on Dex) and Improved Grapple, I'd let them spend a feat to use Dex for grapple checks. It's a little weak, so I'd maybe throw in another trick with it, like they retain their dex against others while grappling if they got the last successful grapple check (between them and the other grappler). |
| UnknownMourner04-11-07, 07:59 PM | AGILE GRAPPLING Prereq: Weapon Finesse, Improved Grapple. Benefit: You may use your Dex bonus rather than your strength bonus in grapple checks. You also retain your Dex bonus to AC agasint otehr while grappling unless you are pinned. |
| Leilond04-12-07, 03:55 AM | Personaly it sounds me bad... seing a strenght 10 rougue overgrapple a strenght 20 warrior sounds really unrealistic (and YES I do judo since 10 years, and NO a 50kg judo expert will not overgrapple a 100kg fighter... probably a 100kg commoner but not a 100kg fighter) |
| Screams_of_the_Oak04-12-07, 11:25 AM | I think dex should allow the ability to escape from a grapple, as raw dictates with the use of 'Escape Artist' ranks to escape from a pin or grapple; however, I do not think that dex alone could maintain control of the grapple. There are tons of tiny little buggers that have crazy dexterity, and could probally slip away from you, but they'd never pin you. |
| jadehawk04-12-07, 03:28 PM | AGILE GRAPPLING How about this minor change... Prereq: Weapon Finesse, Improved Grapple. Benefit: You may use your Dex bonus rather than your strength bonus in grapple checks to avoid being grappled or escape a grapple. You also retain your Dex bonus to AC agasint others while grappling unless you are pinned. That means you don't get it to hold someone in place, but you can slip with a grappling technique as an agile wrestler, as opposed to attempting to pull a houdini as a standard action. |

OK. reread your PHB on grappling. Everyone gets this for free except retaining your dex vs. others and thats not worth a feat |
| Cariyaga04-12-07, 04:49 PM | I think what he meant was that you couldn't use it to initiate a grapple, but you could use it in place of a grapple check to avoid being grappled in the first place. I hope that made sense. |
| jadehawk04-12-07, 04:53 PM | Yep...it does change things...when you attempt to avoid/escape a grapple you roll dex instead of strength on top of a grapple, and you are not considered flatfooted to others while in grappling. Normally you apply strength to such rolls all the time and you are considered flatfooted to those outside the grapple when you are grappling. |

Judo is highly strength dependant. What this guy is looking for sounds a lot more like Aikido. I have not studied Aikido, but I know some guys who have, and I have been impressed... so I wouldn't discount this as an opition right off the bat. |
