First off, Hello, long time lurker actually posting a question.

I thought of this idea for a campaign I might run in the future and would like some input both on the RAI and the RAW.

If a creature has regeneration and takes the die hard feat it will remain conscious at -1 to -9 hp. The question comes with how this remaining conscious interacts with nonlethal damage. If the creature receives nonlethal damage exceeding its hit points does it still fall unconscious or will it keep going until it receives sufficient lethal damage to kill it?

I can see an argument for both sides and would like some other input on this interaction.

Arguments for it losing consciousness: balance
Arguments against it losing consciousness: the feat implies that it will keep fighting until it dies.

Actually, there's a nifty little rule conundrum there. Diehard doesn't address nonlethal damage, so strictly speaking it wouldn't help being knocked unconscious from it. But on the other hand, the rule for nonlethal damage is

When your nonlethal damage exceeds your current hit points, you fall unconscious.

So if a character with diehard had no nonlethal damage (that is to say, his nonlethal damage = 0) is reduced to negative hp, he should fall unconscious because his nonlethal damage now exceeds his hp. That would make diehard a useless feat!

Personally, I would play that diehard prevents you from falling unconscious until your current hp minus your non-lethal damage equals -10.

Enter the Toll Barbarian Frenzied Bezerker...

I AM IMMORTAL!!!!!!

Yes, they would fall unconscious at -10 anyway, no matter what. Die Hard specifically states that it only works until minus 9 anyway.

Get your friendly neighborhood Cleric or Favored Soul to add Delay Death for some real Die Hard action!

Consider Die Hard has pushing unconscious state 10 hp lower. so unless your hp is -10 you are conscious . But -10 from lethal = death and non lethal mean alive but unconscious.
