Surely I'm not the first to think of this. If there is a thread already that addresses this, can someone please direct me to it? Thank you!

Anyway, to the point:
Creatures can have a land speed, a swim speed, and a fly speed.
Likewise, skills exist to parallel these speeds...
Swim speed --> Swim skill
Fly speed --> Jump skill
Another type of movement exists: Burrow speed.
Where's the skill for this? There isn't! Instead, you make Strength checks!
I don't think so! I've seen plenty of people show me "proper" ways to dig with a shovel, spade, hands, etc. and I am obviously less skilled than they are! I propose a Dig skill! It will have Strength as its tied ability and has much steeper DCs than Jump, Climb, and Swim.

So? What do you think?

It sounds pretty silly to me. And the analogy between jumping and flying is weak. Full marks for creativity though.

Anyway, if someone wanted to be really good at digging I'd have them take profession (hole digger), myself. But if a Dig skill floats your boat, I say go for it!

Proffesion (Miner), which is disscused in detail in Races of the Dragon.

Yeah. This argument isn't mine, per se. Its really one of my players. Hes a rogue with the rod of ropes from Complete Scoundrel and is obsessed with trying to make holes in the ground. Both ideas sound good to me. I'll check my Races of the Dragon for what it says. If I don't like it, then I'll have profession (mining) or (hole digger) or (empty-space-in-the-ground-maker) or something. Thanks guys!

For a natural "digger" persay the skill and speed fall under burrow. For an unatural digger per say the skill of digging a tunnel or mine shaft would fall under knowledge engineering, which would emply the use of brace and not so much the speed at which a person digs.

I would give a player a dig speed of 1/8 their land speed to only be maintained for a number of rounds equal to their constitution for loose rock, dirt or sand, and 1/20 their speed for stone, with simple implements.

It would be much easier to alter self into a burrowing humanoid, or cast the spell burrow, or pass wall.

Just wondering, do you realize how unbelievably fast that is? First off... that would allow a human to dig through stone at a rate of 15 feet per minute. Second, your land speed shouldn't be a factor in it at all. I dunno about you, but when I dig a hole with a shovel, it's like 2 feet in an hour, depending on how wide it is.

Profession (miner) would be somewhat different than an actual Dig skill. While for general purposes, such a skill would be incredibly useless to your standard adventuring party, who normally only digs for graves, and rarely ever digs anything with a time limit. That said, if it fits your friend's character and the campaign... whatever floats your boat.
